Yes I am one of the unlucky, did the update today and had Waiting for instructions on the screen all the time. It eventually changed to Waiting for GPS or so, but never started working. Hope, you can fix this.

I have two Karoo devices.  I was successful with the factory reset and repeated Step 1 on both units.  Both units gave me "Waiting for instruction" for at least 10 minutes and then became stuck with "Waiting for GPS" thereafter.  Still stuck when I posted this comment.

Experiencing exactly the symptom described by John Woo above. Installed latest software update today, then tried to ride a route but was not able to make it work.  Tried rebooting.Tried giving it plenty of time to lock onto GPS. Maps were available offline. Tried the "mock route" technique described above but it was not successful. Making a bug report from the device right now (hopefully you received it?)

I rode the route from memory anyway and it *does* show the route's red line and my location, so I know it does have maps and a GPS lock - it just thinks it can't find TBT instructions.

So then I tried the second technique and did a full factory reset. After setting it back up again, tried the "mock" ride again, from here at home with full strong wifi. No luck - still just "Waiting for instruction." Anything else I can try? For now the Karoo is working great as a tracking device but I have not yet had successful routing with it.

Aha! Saw a mention in another thread that auto-pause could be related to the problem. Sure enough - disabled autopause and normal routing instructions on the mock ride came right up. Hate to ride without that feature, but at least this will let me do a functional routing test. You might want to mention this in the instructions above.

Hey Scot, your information is very helpful, if it clears the situation. I went through all these step, you did as well and am still stuck with it.

In „support/tips and troubleshooting“ there is anoher thread, some people describe teh same behavior, but there noone got as far as you did. Need to spread that information, after I have tried it.

HH needs a quick fix for that though, I always use the Auto Pause feature, since I use thsi type of units. I have unwanted stops an red lights on all my routes and .... well it just isnt the correct data without auto pause. Push the button all the time?

At least then also HH would know, where to look for the cause - great input!

Thanks - I'm grateful to have at least a temporary solution, even if it's not perfect. And hopefully HH will find it useful too, if they don't already know it. Did making this change fix it for you as well?

Crazy, it worked for me as well. No further reset or restart necessary, the just kick in and stay there on all screens. Hooray.... great.

Scott Hacker, that was a great discovery.  I just disabled auto-pause and the TbT nav worked.  I will tell the HH guy who's been responsive via email.  Thank you.

Hey guys, pressing button D (top on right side) manually pauses the ride.  Press it again and you got the option to resume the ride and off you go!!

Turning off Auto Pause also did the trick for me.  I can live with this for a while but hope that HH can fix this soon.

I tried unlocking the navigation engine and also did the factory reset as per the instructions at the top of this article. I reinstalled my heart rate sensor and speed sensor and downloaded the maps. I turned off auto pause and loaded a very complex route from my work to home using a mix of paved trails and roads. My Karoo performed flawlessly for the first time in over a month! The TBT instructions were spot on, even on the trails! I am now really happy with my Karoo and I am looking forward to doing more route testing. Thanks Gopinath for the excellent instructions for getting my Karoo working again!

Just wanted to ditto Johnny Pugh - After finding the "disable autopause" workaround, I had my first successful routing experience with Karoo, and it was absolutely perfect -- a joy compared to trying to do routing on a Garmin 820. Really nice.

Hi all, I have been having this problem myself and started experimenting a bit. Turned out the problem was definitely not weak gps. However looking at the software platform I remembered having had similar troubles with my mobile phone: the Android software not being able to cope with the gps signal and the navigation app therefore unable to display a direction prompt.

So far a surefire way for me to get around this issue is:
    - while the problem occurs: turn on airplane mode if not on yet + turn on navigation;
    - reboot the Karoo.
After this the navigation prompt is shown within seconds.

I had this exact issue yesterday. GPS signal could not have been a problem as I was in the middle of nowhere in rural KY out in the open.

So far the Karoo isn't any more reliable than my old Garmin 520 for navigation....very disappointed about that.

Looking very much looking forward to it being fixed.

Hi All, a significant update to the TbT workaround, that doesn't involve factory resetting the device and losing all information

  • Avatar
    John Woo

Hi Raveen. Sounds great. Is this a new workaround?. Need to keep auto-paise disabled for TbT to work?

I hope this article was helpful to few people to get their TBT working. The users who still not able to get their TBT working, I kindly request you to email at support@hammerhead.io after following Step 5. Please make sure to send your serial number and bug report, I'll have my team review them and understand what is causing the issue for those people.

Just to add to this thread:

After updating to the latest version (as of June 2nd) creating a route on the Dashboard, i tried to ride it. I switched on the Karoo in my notoriously GPS-less concrete shed, selected the route and started the ride. THEN went outside.

For the remaining of the route, i got the 'Waiting for instructions' (and later 'Waiting for GPS') message, no TBT.

I stopped halfway, ended the ride, and completely switched off the Karoo. Had a coffee, went outside and switched the Karoo on again.

The remainder of the route (so still the same 'gpx'), i had perfect TBT!

So, to summarize, it seems that starting a route without GPS completely messes up the navigation / TBT, with no change of the TBT once (i assume) a GPS connection is found.

But when the Karoo has a GPS connection right from the startup of the device (or at least before selecting/starting the route), TBT seems to work perfectly (with a route created in the HH Dashboard).

Hope this adds something to the conversation.

    Best,

    Jasper

Hey Jasper. Thanks for sharing your experience. How do you know when you have a GPS signal? Is there a GPS icon? Do you think that having data service thru a SIM card will help? Thanks

  • Avatar
    Jasper Fontaine

I have been wondering the same.. It seems the 'location-pin' icon is always highlighted, to indicate that GPS usage in general is ON. Its certainly not indicating if the Karoo is connected to 1, 2 or more GPS satellites.

I doubt having a SIM will help improve your GPS signal, but i can be wrong, it might piggyback on the connection i don't know.

This https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/community/posts/360001667994-GPS-Signal-lock-indicator post seems to be on the radar already!

Very helpful. Thanks. iPhones and android based mobile devices rarely have this GPS issue. I wonder if the sensors are more robust than those in the Karoos. I am not tech savvy so just using my intuition. Thanks.

    Hi all,

I went for a ride yesterday, having WIFI & 3G turned on.

I wanted to participate in an organised ride, 25 Km from home. Gave in the adress to guide me to the start and TbT came on quite fast and performed well during ride over there. At a certain moment, I went of the suggested route, because I wanted to use a bike-trail next to the river instead of normal roads. Karoo always wanted to guide me back to the place where I got of the route. But using the map, I could navigate myself to the route further on and from that moment, TbT used the suggested route again.

Then started the tour. I continued my ride, but message 'Destination Reached' kept filling a third of my screen, thus blocking some data I have on my main page. Only way to get this disappeared was switching off the navigation in my Pages settings.

At the end of the tour I wanted to get back home, using TbT. So still continuing my ride, I choose for "Change a route" and gave in my home adress. Got "Waiting for instructions" & "Waiting for GPS" all the time. Luckely I could follow the red line (and black line for ride in the morning) to get the right track.

Strange that in the same ride TbT works, and then later on it fails...

Also, it has no sense whatsoever to keep showing "Destination Reached" all the time. A simple click or confirmation should make it disappear ...

Since the latest update that I loaded about a week ago, I'm getting the "Waiting for Instructions" and then "Waiting for GPS" when I try to ride a route. I've tried the mock ride fix, and also the fix to go into the settings and clear out the data on the HX Navigation app setting. All to no avail. I've tried starting a ride from home while I still have wifi. I've tried disabling auto-pause, as some have suggested. In short, I've done everything except a factory device reset, and I still just get the "Waiting for GPS". I did not see this issue at all until the most recent software update. I really want to like my Karoo, but at this point, it's just a glitchy, frustrating device that I'm about to lose patience with.

hi @Kevin, the upcoming update has a few fixes in this regard, you will soon receive it

    Hi Raveen,

Followed all of the instructions above, no solution, still "waiting for instruction"...

    It's getting very frustrating !

Moreover, when creating a route on the Karoo, in the first screen I am positioned correctly by GPS.

But when actually creating the route and starting the ride, the GPS positions me a few hundred meters away from my actual position and you can see in fact my position moving on the screen while I am standing completely still. So the Karoo is detecting and registrating a movement (and also shows speed) without me actually moving at all ! But even then it never gets to my actual location.

This seems very disturbing to me and is in fact disappointing.

Both of my Karoo’s TbT are back to the beginning, stuck with Waiting for GPS or Waiting for instructions. They were both working after the last firmware update but failed again this weekend. Most of the time I can still navigate by following the red line except when the route intersects with left or right directions. I wouldn’t know which way to turn. I had to pull over and use Ride With GPS on my iPhone to get my bearings. Very frustrating and dangerous in the middle of traffic with cars. I fell because I wasn’t paying attention as I was distracted in the Karoo. Raveen, I recommend you guys partner with someone like Ride w/ GPS rather than trying to organically fix this issue which has been dragging so long. At some soon I need to start using my iPhone or some other navigation device. There’s only so much I can beta test. I need a working device as I ride a lot.

Same here, even after the start at home was ok, after a few turns and a deviation from the route, I also got these failure messages as before. I am almost sure, that it is not the head unit, that has a problem, I think it is the back end, the thing cannot sync with the server, and that does not depend on internet availability. Maybe the unit stops trying after a while. But I have a hard time to see, why once it works and then w/o software update in between it does not work any more. What ticks me off the most, I cannot get rid od the red bar, I have to stop the ride, safe and go to the settings to switch it off. Nasty. If it would just disappear after 2 min of trying, that already would make it more useable than what we have right now.

New software, rode with it yesterday. Started off ok. On my route I had intersecting parts of the route, and since it is all the same colour, I turned the wrong path. Karoo kept on showing „rerouting...“ until the end of the ride. It does so, while I have returned on the route too, but Karoo does not recognize. My major point is, that it is not so bad, since I can ride along the red line. But I cannot get rid of the red bar. Please make it swipeable. Let it roll to the lower bottom, when I swipe downward, let it roll back up, when I swipe from the bottom of the screen upward. It did not disappear, when changing screens. The red bar blocks out essential screen info. Is there a way to turn off TBT in ride?
