Hi Hammerhead -- I have a Karoo2 and am a newbie user having done perhaps 4 or 5 rides with it. The unit has now gone dead, no signs of life. I have charged it using a brick and also directly into USB port, still no dice when I press and hold the B button. Guidance appreciated. Thank you.

Same here. First time I took it out the box I had to do a hard reset to get it up and running. Now it has happened again, no signs of life.

Hello I have the same issue. Charged the device over night and today it does not turn on. Used it three times so far. It made the last software update automatically yesterday. Please help to solve the issue.

    Thanks,

    Patrick

Hi, this has happened to my brand new Karoo 2. Used it on a few rides while the battery lasted from initial set-up and charge. Went to recharge it using the provided Karoo 2 charging cable, plugged into my laptop. It then did not turn on and was completely unresponsive. Factory reset, which rebooted it, and had to go through the entire set-up process again. Tried to charge it again as it was still low and the same thing happened. Now it shows a 0% battery screen sporadically but is still not working and is completely unresponsive.

Have a support ticket in for +24 hrs but still no response. Please help.

Hi everyone, exactly the same problem. Got my K2 this week. Charged it 2x overnight directly into the USB-c port of my laptop. Afterwords it doesn't turn on. The hard reset restarted the device.

Hi, same problem. I have had my Karro 2 for quite a while, but I though Hammerhead would be able to solve this through updates.
My Karro 2 have never been able to charge unless already powered on!
After the latest update 1.212.1045.12 this still persists. However yesterday the Karoo drained the battery completely in approx 3 hours. As it was not switched off, I could not charge it. Only solution - like many times before - is a hard reset, which requires an effort with restoring settings.
Add to the list of problems that the sensor connection is a as bad as EVER. It loses and reconnects sensors like all the time!

Hi Paul - have you managed to resolve your issue? I'm having the same problem and am pretty sick of dealing with it.

I'm sure support will be back with you soon. Try the supplied cable together with a good quality wall adapter like for an iPad and leave it charging for a few hours. Karoo 2 seems picky about charging source and does not like fast chargers. Since I started to use the supplied cable with an iPad adapter everything has been good. Not an ideal scenario.

Thanks for the reply and tip, Rob. I have just plugged it into a wall adapter with their cable. Going to leave it a few hours like you suggest. Perhaps it didn't like being charged from my laptop (?). Although it worked fine being charged the first time straight out the box.

It's a shame because it's an excellent product when it works.

    * Correction, and in fairness, Hammerhead Support replied last night. Was in my junk.

Hi Will, good, see what happens then. Yes, it probably did not like the laptop supply. If it still doesn't start normally after a few hours then do a hard rest following the HH guide. That is what I needed to do. It should get you up and running again hopefully.

Not had any charging issues since using the iPad adapter, mine does not need to be off to charge, and not seen any sensor issues either. Sounds like you need to contact support.

I have this problem too and would like to have clear guidance on both the causes, problem and resolution.

    • What are different scenarios and recommendations around various types of charging? (This is important when out on the road and charging options are limited)
    • How exactly is "fast charging" causing the problem?
    • What is causing the brick mode? Is it completely our of power or has it crashed/frozen? (The troubleshooting steps are very different with or without power)

I have also had this problem. I've only used my Karoo 2 a few times, but it seems incredibly fickle about whether it will charge or not. I found it wouldn't charge from a USB port at the back of my desktop computer... so I tried a plug into the wall with a USB socket. That worked. Then tried to charge it up at the wall again after a ride, and when I came to switch it on, there was zero charge, it wouldn't power up. I had done the latest software update in the meantime... has that affected things?  So I then tried my desktop computer again... and it seems to be charging.

This really isn't acceptable, can Hammerhead please explain what is going on, if they have identified a problem and fixed it in the latest software (e.g. so that it only charges from a low power computer?) then please tell us!

Thanks. I've tried the supplied cable with this Apple plug... and left it charging. But when I came back it was completely drained...

Hammerhead support: can you please respond on this question of what charger output should be.Looking at the range of Apple chargers, you can see that there are 4 different types for different iPads..

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT210133

So the information 'an iPad charger' doesn't really help....

    Hi Rob

Thanks for all your help. I worked out that you were a super-helpful user, rather than Hammerhead. Thanks for the link, not sure why I couldn't find this myself... Now I just have to work out what volts/amps different plugs and computers are outputting...

    Cheers and thanks again

No worries Peter. HH probably should have included an adapter in the box or made it less sensitive.

Same as what happened to me. Read above. iPad charger not iPhone charger. Hard reset as per instructions online. Not been an issue since.

    Also see here: https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/articles/360058770653-Charging-Karoo-2

I also charge with a Google Pixel supplied charger rated DC 5V 3A 18W.

    Good luck.

I've only had mine for a few rides and also having this issue.

It seems like the root cause is the Karoo 2 isn't going into any kind of sleep mode and it drains itself down to nothing, and then it needs the electronic equivalent of a doctor using a defibrillator to wake it back up again.

Using a macbook to charge it won't do it, nor will a basic USB charger, nor will an Anker Powercore 5000 (up to 2A). To get that jolt it needs, I found it requires at least 2.1 Amp at 5V. This is obviously a problem Hammerhead needs to look into.

The fact that a hard reset jolts it back to life shows there is a software solution, they could implement a nicer "soft reset" that does the jolt without deleting everything. Or they could give us an option to restore *everything* after a hard reset so it's not such a pain, but that would require an internet connection and that won't always be available when you're about to start a ride and realize your device won't turn on. Most power bricks aren't putting out 2.1V+
