    The system successfully updated after the hard reset.

    The update screen has the KAROO logo and two progress bars. This is where the device was failing before. Instead of the KAROO logo, it displayed the generic Android error logo with the two bars, and obviously the bars didn't progress due to the error. The Android error logo is a green robot laying prone with it's hatch open and an error symbol.

    I'm performing hard reset now and will report back.

    I noticed that when it failed to update, the "preparing update" screen (before rebooting) only made progress to 20% before restarting. Could the update have been corrupted? Is performing a hard reset the only way to clear the staged update?

    Perhaps you could add another app to the device that allows for update file manipulation and management.
