Hi Onno, great sleuthing work. Karoo has many services but Telemetry service is not one of our own creation. Its part of the Mapbox library.

I will give this a try myself and get the devs to look at it,

    Wonderful work btw!

I wonder if they are using the MapBox TelemetryService. It is used to log location data to help improve maps.

Good debugging.  It may or not be the solution but I hope HH looks at it seriously.  This also brings up an issue mentioned previously: If the software is open sourced it helps everyone.  HH can open up an app store, and a large group of developers suddenly become available to debug and enhance the Karoo.

The Karoo is a really nice piece of hardware, and that's what HH should be selling.  Building the system on top of Android was brilliant, especially if HH lets others take advantage of the development environment.  The software crew is understandably overwhelmed right now.  To be truly agile, it would be great if development was opened up to include the group of enthusiastic software developer/bikers that are waiting to help.

Definitely MapBox.  MapBox is listed as the map provider on the unofficial forum.

    Onno,

This is a good find and you are correct that it is a part of our mapping.

We would like to reach out on email to share continued testing on this.

This could have been the clue we needed.

    @Onno

"So searching the device I found a service which got my attention. It's called "TelemetryService"."

Where did you find it? I activated the developer options (tap like crazy on "Build Number") and did let show system apps. Nothing close to this ominous service...

Btw: I can confirm those f***ing reboots. I received my Karoo yesterday and after system update and initial setup it ran for approx 90 minutes and did a self initiated reboot. Today it was approx 90 minutes again on standby before a ride and did a reboot mid-ride. I started the activity again (all previous activity data of that ride were lost) and 5 minutes later it did a reboot again! Then I did a manual reboot and the rest of the ride (~20 minutes) went fine. I did put my bike away, connected my Karoo to my WiFi and 10 minutes later it did a reboot again... Oo

I don't have a SIM card installed and it did the reboots even in airplane mode...

I suspect that Onno was using ADB to manipulate services (and install Restart Counter).

Ok, factory reset did nothing. After setting all up, a power down, power up, some checking of the settings and 40 minutes idling on my desktop it did a reboot again... -_-

In this state of form the Karoo is pretty much unusable...

Let's hope it will be addressed soon Manual. I understand your dissapointment.

@Doug, I'm a bit further than just installing apps using adb. But as said in the first line of my post, NOT for the common user. Don't try or dive into it if you don't understand what I'm saying ;-)

I was only responding to Manuel's question about why he couldn't see the service from the Karoo. ADB was just a WAG on my part, as it is a likely starting point for investigation and debugging. Obviously, anyone who is not intimately familiar with this environment should be touching this. You can do real harm with some of these tools.

BTW, I didn't mean in any way too minimize what you did. It was some great sleuthing.

Would simply opting-out of the telemetry for MapBox (by clicking on the "i" next to MapBox in the top-left part of the map-screen and choosing "TELEMETRY SETTINGS" > "DISAGREE" be enough to stop the reboots?

I had multiple reboots yesterday evening, with the unit simpy sitting on my desk. I just opted-out and haven't had any tonight (also just sitting on my desk).
