Hey Nathaniel, what are the settings you have on your rides, or if Karoo is idle?

    Settings are…

    - HR and Cadence sensors
    - WiFi off, cellular data on
    - Auto-pause at 2.5MPH
    - Auto brightness (yes, I know I can save battery by having this set low, but I’ve always had it set at auto brightness without too much battery drain)

None of my settings have changed between releases.  Could the new monitoring during pauses account for the increased battery usage?  I haven't been paused that often: just at red lights and stop signs.  If there's a way to turn off the monitoring while idle I wouldn't have a problem with that, if it would preserve the battery.

This indeed looks like an ideal setting which would be present to get the best battery usage. I will check this with the team and let you know, however, I do not think the auto-pause could have such an increased effect.

    I did some checking...

First hour plus of ride is through an urban area with relatively frequent stops for red lights etc. - about 12% usage per hour.

Next hour plus is more rural with less frequent stops - about 9% usage per hour.

Next 18 minutes I took a break and Karoo was auto-paused.  9% battery usage in 18 minutes!

The monitoring during auto-pause is broken.  Fix it or drop it before the next release.  As is, it makes the Karoo unusable for long rides except on the Tour where there are no stops.

    Hi,

I'm seeing similar. Prior to this release I was seeing minimal battery drain whilst the device was idle. Since the latest upgrade I'm losing about 10-15% of charge for every 12 hours the device is idle.

I haven't done any long rides since I last upgraded, but, on a couple of short, half hour commutes, I have seen about 10-15% battery drain on each. On the same commute on previous releases I'd see about 5-6% usage. I have not changed any settings since the release.

I'm also seeing around 5% per hour at idle compared to <0.5% hour before the update. It seems like the battery drain rate is the same whether riding or idle.

I'm curious - what are your settings that you can get 5% per hour when riding?

I noticed it drained a good deal just sitting around.  I had left it on after the update, unplugged, screen was off.  So not in a ride, not doing anything with it.  I think it lost about 50% of the charge overnight.  I went for a shorter ride (about 20 miles) a couple of days later after charging it again, it lost about 30%.  So something in the update has caused a slip in the battery optimizations they had previously done.

Since the last update the battery drains completely in two days while everything is turned off. Hope there comes a fix soon.

I've noticed an increase in idle battery usage too, since the last update:

    • Prior to the update I'd commute to work and pause my ride when I arrive and turn the screen off.  This I think turned off the GPS as the battery drained only a few % while I was working (Similar to a phone with no sim card).  I'd then un-pause and ride home at the end of the day keeping the day's riding as one activity.  Happy days.
    • After the update and using the device the same way I see around 4% an hour drain with the device paused and screen off at my desk.  The GPS is enabled and draining.

I guess I can turn off location services while it's paused, but it seems more user friendly to do this automatically while paused and the screen is off.
