New Average data Animations
AnsweredMaybe I am missing something, but why do the new circular animations that show if you are above or below the average (speed, power, cadence) only work if you are showing the average data field already? Why do I want to know what my average is to see if it's increasing or decreasing? The longer the ride is, the less the average number actually moves, and the less useful it becomes.
What would make this useful is to see the current speed, power (3s avg), or cadence to know if that is above or below the average. That would make this feature actually useful. I don't want to see if my average power is increasing while looking at my average power. I want to see my current power and see if that is above or below my average (same for speed, etc.).

At least one ATG member made this suggestion. I don't know if they got an answer...

One doesn't need to ride a bike or have used a bike computer to know that field wouldn't be useful the way it was executed; you just need to know how to do math. The longer you ride, the more data your computer collects, the more the average data point becomes smoothed, and the less additional data will move that average data point. Ever look at the average speed on your car's trip computer that you haven't reset in a while? It doesn't move all that much.

Ali - we appreciate that HH are trying to give us useful new features. But a lot of us wonder who comes up with this sort of stuff - as Jeremy quite rightly points out, you don't need to even by a cyclist to know that an average field changes less and less as time goes on, so a higher/lower thing would be a lot more useful on a variant of a current speed field, not showing the actual average.
This sort of thing makes it look like HH don't have a clue what cyclists actually want, no matter how much we're told that Karoo is "designed by cyclists". Anyone who went on a medium to long ride with that new data field as it currently is would soon see that it's not useful. It shouldn't be up to the ATG to notice this sort of obvious issue.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's not useful as-is, it's just not ideal and does beg the question of "who thought this up?". ATG members did point this out and noted that the indicator would be better as it related to current speed instead of an average of an average. If my average speed is 15 and I'm going 16, it should be green as it would be trending upwards, even really slowly depending on the length of the ride. I noted as much on my "preview" video as well as pointing out how improvements might be made to the graphic, particularly if it the data field is used full page. I've been told HH is watching these videos, so I don't always type up all my suggestions formally. Picture if worth a thousand words and all...
