Map backgroud and road contrast(again!!!)

I support this comment having made it twice before myself. It is simply hard to see roads and paths on the unit, This is particularly the case with minor roads (the ones you would like to ride on) which are white on feint grey and re-route track which is a very faint blue. Even the text is unclear. For example, cues are often useless for me because I can't read the distance to them. I expect greater contrast might chew up more power. If that's the case, perhaps there could be a couple of options.

We were indeed promised an improvement on this a long time ago. The main thing that I use my Karoo for is the map, but white on light grey doesn't make it easy (it's pretty much impossible) to see side turnings.

It's a real shame that this is taking so long to deliver. I don't want new data fields, I'd like a new map that I can see a lot more of than just the red line.

I recently did a 3 week tour of Europe. Several times I became uncertain as to where to go due to roadworks or just missing a turn (the Karoo unhelpfully having no audible alerts). Rather than being able to use the Karoo to see where I was and my options (the re-route track being highly unreliable and virtually invisible), I would have to get out my tablet and open maps.me. Immediately everything became clear. I could see where I was, all the roads and paths even buildings were eminently clear and it gave me a perfectly good route to follow, all things the Karoo was supposed to do. Maps.me makes use of Open Street Map just as the Karoo does so why is its readability so poor. It can only be the data stream that Hammerhead is using.

HH support, if I've got any of this wrong please correct me (and Happy Dawali!)...

HH support told me that they need to update the version of Open Street Maps that they are using.  They said they are delaying the update because they are working on a way to make it unnecessary for users to have to re-download maps and routes when the update occurs.  My reaction was that I would gladly re-download my maps and routes if the OSM upgrade fixed some of the navigation bugs and made the maps better.  HH responded that they believed that the majority of users did not want to have to reload their maps/routes.

Can we take a quick poll on this?  Are people willing to re-download routes and maps to get the new version of OSM loaded onto the Karoo?

I could care less if I had to redownload the whole system, re downloading everything would be worth it to have an actual gps mapping unit. The stats are great and nneded for a cycling computer. But this is suppose to be a usable gps mapping cycling computer. I'll download load whatever I need to, to make it better.

I guess what puzzles me the most is do the developers and owners of this company not cycle with this device and see an immediate need for this .I could buy a lot cheaper cycling computer for stats only .

I don't have a problem with re-downloading either, unless I still have to download small portions at a time.  When I last downloaded off-line maps, I had to not expand the selection very much or it would freeze and never finish downloading, I could also not queue up too many sections, so it was a real pain to get a 200 mile trip downloaded.  Then add what I want for just around my metro area, it is not a fun experience.   Hopefully they have that problem fixed, but I would still rather re-download given all that pain than have the maps so hard to read.  would also like to see a dark mode for maps, you can make all the other screens dark, but the map is still very bright when using at night.

I agree on dark mode too, but hell just making the maps readable at this point is a step in the right direction.

    Hey All.

Although, we are a bit late with delivering this feature/improvement, please be assured that it is something in our pipeline and will be actioned as per the current software priority.

We appreciate your patience and understanding with this.

    Thanks for the response Franklin.

    One question:

Does 'actioned as per the current software priority' mean it will be in the the next update??

    Hey Franklin,

Thanks for your response.  Are you still holding up going to a later version of OSM to make it so users do not have to reload maps and routes?  If so I think most would prefer if you go ahead updating OSM, hopefully fixing many of the navigation bugs, in exchange for needing to reload maps and routes.

    Thanks,

    Nathaniel

Downloading maps is not a big issue for me because it works ok and because I use the "available offline" feature which downloads a strip map for each route. I mention this because many people still don't seem to know about this alternative quick way to get sufficient mapping for your ride.

Something else which also needs to be urgently fixed is the online route creation tool. It doesn't allow line links which makes it effectively dysfunctional. Anyone who has ever done route creation knows that all mapping has faults plus you often want to go off track whether to cross a road, join another road, use an un-mapped path whatever. So here's my challenge. I challenge someone from Hammerhead to say they actually use the online route creation facility and that it works for them anywhere other than downtown New York. I have to create routes in ridewithgps and import them which is convoluted but works ok but it is a function that was supposed to be available directly for the Karoo.

I'm harping on this because navigation was supposed to be what the Karoo was all about.

It can't be just an issue of downloading maps.

Karoo uses MapBox's mapping service and app service to display maps and routing. This toolbox is customisable, but it probably takes a whole load of effort from HH to implement and test this. There have been posts on this in the past (have a look at MapBox's website and you'll find their documentation on this, and customisation options for displaying maps).

Maybe they're at the same time planning to use a later version of OSM maps, I don't know, but it's not just a "download a later OSM" thing.

Having said that, to me it's unbelievable that this much-needed change hasn't been delivered over six months since HH executives told us via a FB livestream  (see https://karoousers.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=196 for a transcript) that they could see it needed improving (and that's after Karoo users had already been telling them for months before then that it desperately needed improving.

Indeed my biggest frustration is how HH succeeds in having the best display in class but then totally ruins it with this absolutely ridiculous map contrast and overall design and 80% (allright maybe 70%) wasted screen real estate on the data screens!

    Hi all,

Franklin, can you tell us if HH is going to be updating the underlying mapping software soon?  I probably misspoke when I said that OSM was being updated - I imagine it's Mapbox (which uses OSM for the HH road maps displayed?).  Do you anticipate the update to Mapbox will fix many of the problems?  Any chance that the downloaded maps could now be for a region (e.g., state, province, country, ...) instead of tiles?

    Thanks,

    Nathaniel

The Mapbox upgrade is coming in the next release - next week for regular users, this week (today) for ATG users. I don't know if this changes the map contrast, but I'm told it should fix an annoying bug that I have where after an upgrade my offline area re-downloads.

@Steve Will this also fix the never ending frustration with the "unfortunately the ride has stopped" bug? Will it be possible to download more than 7 to8 map peaces bevor no more downloads are possible? Would be necessary and fine.
