Feature request: options for re-routing
AnsweredI think some kind of prompt and user intervention will have to be offered for re-routing scenarios, however intelligent it is "on the fly". There is another post here about navigation on an out-and-back, where the poster was re-routed "home", when in-fact they were just forced to turn back briefly to take a diversion before continuing on the route.
I found that when I just embarked on a route but didn't follow it from the start. I basically took a different route that ran in parallel to the mapped route but intended to join the route later. But it seemed like the Karoo wanted to keep routing me back to the start all the time, instead of just directing me to the closest place on the route.
I have also found that the Karoo was confused on a "figure 8" route that started and ended in the intersection.
I don't have first hand experience with the Garmin 1030 Plus, but when you pause a ride, it has three new ‘Re-routing’ options (copied from DC Rainmaker's review):
A) Re-join where you left the course
B) Skip ahead to the next logical point to re-join course
C) Cut across the course to somewhere way downstream
Something like this would be incredibly useful.
One scenario where I don't know how the Karoo will behave is the following:
I create a long bikepacking route that I know will take several days to complete, but I don't know where I will stop for the night. Hence, I will ride as far as I want on day 1 and then stop, which might involve a significant detour from the route to sleep.
On day 2 and forward, I will load the same route, but obviously want to be routed from wherever I slept to a point I choose on the route, and not back to the beginning... (How will the Karoo 2 currently handle this scenario?)
Another scenario is when joining a circular route at a different point than where the starting point was created. I want to be able to choose to join the route wherever I happen to be at the moment, and follow it past the original start/end points and finish where I joined.

Hi Ola, Thanks a lot for sharing your experience and suggestions with us regarding the existing Re-routing function on the Karoo 2. As you said, the Re-routing options are not customizable on the Karoo 2 as in Garmin. You do have the option "Route to start" available on Karoo 2 in the quick actions menu.
Please see: https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/articles/360058711853--Quick-Action-Menu-The issue you mentioned is not the expected behavior as the Karoo 2 should Re-route you to the closest point on the Route. Could you confirm the Karoo 2 is Re-routing to the start of the Route every time or any other points? The cycling path should also be available to the closest point of the Route for Karoo 2 to Re-route you.
With regards to the next two scenarios you mentioned, you can join the route from anywhere and the Karoo 2 will guide you to join to the closest point of the Route with Red Route lines. It is not necessary that you have to start from the official starting point. -
Hello, it seems that the routing to the nearest point of the route does not work well, it does not do its job, it guides you to points further away from your position and makes pointless breaks in the route. It also does not take into account if you go by road bike or mtb
I await your response and, hopefully, a future solution. I have attached some examples, thanks and kind regards.

@Hammerhead - do you have any feedback on @fran's great examples? I think they illustrate the exact issue I am having.
Secondly, related to the bikepacking scenario I mentioned, since there is no standby-mode, I want to nominate a "Resume later" function, which also exists on Garmin. I would expect this function to save the entire ride up to this point in the same way as a "stop ride" would, and let me power off the device. Next time I power it on, I want to be able to resume the existing ride at the point where I paused it.

I too have found a case where rerouting is important: when a bridge is out. I had this recently and I wanted to be rerouted around the bridge and not constantly taken back to it or having to return to the start. Fortunately, the group knew a way around it and once back on the route, everything was fine.

While I was in Wales I got 20 miles away from the finish of an 82 miles ride and found the road was closed due to a fallen power line. So I rode back and attempted to do a detour in the hope that the GPS would pick another route and take me past the closed road. But after 3 attempts and kept brining me back to the same point.
By then I was running out of daylight. So I went to look for a Train, but the station was closed for engineering. Then I went to the bus depo, but they did not allow bikes.
So it cost me £80 in a Taxi and the loss of a Wahoo Roam head unit that I had a a spare as It was solo bike packing. The Taxis driver knocked it off the bike when it was getting loaded into the Taxi.
So it would be awesome if we could have an option to say avoid the next 2 miles, for example

I fully agree that we need a possibility to avoid a certain part/segment of an ongoing route, with the Karoo handling the rerouting so you can join the route again after the specific section.
This is very useful for road closures and other obstructions that result in an inability to continue the planned route. I had this happen to me today and I was very disappointed to see that the Karoo is of no use in scenarios like this. The solution would have been to mark the upcoming segment as "blocked" or something similar and the Karoo should then have guided me around the obstruction.
@Hammerhead - Is this feature planned? If not, please put it on the roadmap since this is essential functionality.
