Replacement glass
AnsweredI've gained a "spare" Karoo v1 which works fine, but was in a crash and has a cracked and damaged gorilla glass screen. Apart from that it works fine and even responds to touch.
I know (from support) that Karoo won't do replacements - I do think they need to rethink this policy (and also batteries) - it's hardly "green" - however I'm asking if anyone has had any success in replacing the glass with something refashioned or even better know a source! (doubtful).
The only issue I can see if is the digitiser is part of the glass screen.
I'm going to do a teardown later, but would welcome any advice. Ta :)

Hey Gordon. We do not recommend your own repair operations. However, since you are attempting it, here are the things you need to know.
The Gorilla Glass does have the ambient light sensor and display attached to it. It is not completely separate.Comment actions -
So today I took the plunge and took apart my damaged K1. My advice to those who want to have a go - don't. I've taken apart a couple of mobile phones in the past and disassembled a laptop with success so I was quite confident. However this is not like that. It's basically glued together and nothing will come apart. Even getting the battery out is hard as it is glued in with a glue strip. The connector from the battery to the connector on the cavity is weird and I think I've damaged it as there is no way I can get it together again. I suspect they glue the connectors together and then retain it with a plastic strip - you'd need a microscope. Or I just broke it. So now a working, but badly damaged K1 is now kaput - see my comment in the battery thread for a couple of images.
Since it was dead I carried on and took off the circuit board, which has those very small ribbon connectors with the locking plastic piece at the back. Again extremely small.
Once you remove this you have a metal and plastic assembly that is all glued together and there is no way any of it is going to give way.

I tell you, none of this will budge.
So there you go, one now totally ruined K1. I only bought it so I'd have a spare battery, so that didn't work.
Let this be a warning - listen to your mum or in this case Franklin!!!
