Have you tried Bluetooth Tethering. I have an Android and Bluetooth Tethering is supposed to work without the Hotspot switched on:

    - Sharing mobile data through Bluetooth is very simple. Just enable Bluetooth tethering, pair devices with each other, and enjoy the internet. By default, most Android phones have this feature.

I have not tried it as I have a SIM installed.

    As for the Companion App:
More people need to look at the K2 help!
It’s for sending Notifications from the phone to the K2. Why it’s needed is a mystery, however if you want Notifications to pop-up on the K2, will need to have it running..

@MikeF thanks for the hint, I did try BT tethering, but it doesn't work I think device would need to be always connected to phone via BT and it seems k2 does connect in some form of standby mode.

Yes indeed i forgot k2 app is notifications agent, I'd wish it also provided internet tethering on demand e.g. when looking up address as k2 only needs internet connection on demand rather than all the time

For now WiFi hotspot is the way to do this, but i think hotspot has significantly higher battery footprint on mobile phone than BT, though I might be wrong.
