Feature Request: Crash sensor support
AnsweredIt seems that Karoo is uniquely positioned to be able to take advantage of crash sensors like Specialized's ANGi as the Karoo has cellular connectivity and GPS.
Using a service like Twilio send a text message to emergency contacts alerting them of a possible user crash with their last known location. User would be alerted to a detected crash with a flashing screen and a countdown to alert broadcast. To abort broadcast user would hold down any one of the non-power hard keys or hold the on-screen button for some period of time. Holding the key stops but does not reset the countdown.
To help distribute the crash event it would be nice to have a short URL ie. crash.hammerhead.io/123456, for a crash event that could be shared with emergency response teams. This webpage would show emergency info:
- Name
- Age
- Sex
- Weight
- Height
- Allergies
- Medical Conditions, ie. Asthma
- Emergency Contact Info
- Speed prior to impact
- Map showing:
- - Path and direction of travel in the 30 seconds prior to the crash
- - Crash location
- - Last known location (updated continuously)

It will be picked up and priorotised based on the number of user requests for this particular feature.

Funny, I was thinking of suggesting the same thing. As I understand it, Specialized's sensor is now included with all their helmets.This is an opportunity for Hammerhead not just to do something that Garmin already does, but something NO other head unit can do. Unless they've changed something, it won't work with any head unit - on purpose, since they are trying to setup their own Strava-like network - and only connects via smartphone. They've also got it using their ride and reporting app.
The Karoo is probably the only head unit widely available that could conceivably connect to the Specialized crash sensor without major reverse engineering of Specialized's code assuming all these requirements of the sensor can be met:
1) low-energy Bluetooth can be enabled;
2) the Specialized ride app can be run in the background concurrently with the Karoo ride app (and using the same gps sensor data;
3) email, text messaging or both can be enabled;
4) an external speaker is attached and enabled (for the alerts it provides)
5) stub code is written to bring the Specialized app to the front if a crash event is triggered.

I was searching for a feature like this and find out that this is available on some other GPS's/navigation. It's a very good, and now in this COVID-19 era, a needed feature, because it's a safe way to bike on your own or maximum 2 persons. So when you have a crash then, it's a safe idea that your Karoo could have such a feature. Call help when have crashed, even this is not he purpose.
ope your'e gonna put this higher on the list.
With regards,

Any update on this as the original request was a year ago. I currently have a 1030 plus which I am frustrated with for various reasons; however, one essential feature it does have, is crash detection and notification of emergency contacts. I have been involved in a prior accident/concussion that made me so confused/forgetful that I could not answer my wife's repeated questions as to where I was or how I got there. I don't even know or remember how I dialed her. You never realize how essential the feature is until you actually need it.
So if someone from hammerhead could communicate that this is a feature that you expect to be implemented, then I will wait and purchase the Karoo2. However, if after 1 yr of the original request above, no steps taken or no one can comment on this potential feature, then no offense, but the hammerhead is not in the conversation, for me. Here's how Wahoo advertises their feature. "ELEMNT ROAM works in conjunction with the Specialized Ride App, to support alerts from the Specialized ANGi crash detector. If ANGi detects a potential crash, the countdown timer will appear on the Wahoo display. In the event the rider is OK and doesn’t need to call for help, the alert can be cancelled from the computer itself."
If your major competitors, garmin and wahoo, include this ability, and your tagline above the Karoo2 picture is "Building the World's Finest
Cycling Computer," I think it's an important feature to be able to either say whether this will be included or not at this point. -
Thank you, David Lee.
I very strongly endorse David's feature request. For many of us, who use bicycle computers and who travel thousands of miles each year, ride safety and our family are among the most important factors in choosing our products.
Paraphrasing what David wrote, If your ... tagline above the Karoo2 picture is "Building the World's Finest
Cycling Computer," crash-detection and alert are essential features!" -
I purchased the original Hammerhead H unit, then moved to the Karoo, and eventually purchased the Karoo2. Over the years I have expressed to the Hammerhead team that crash detection should be added to the program, but all I ever hear is they will have to prioritize the request. I really feel that the safety of the Hammerhead community should be moved to the top of the Que. Maybe you should get a new Product team that cares about people.

I was recently in a crash and when the dust settled at the hospital, my wife said "I thought you said your bike computer would send me a text message that you were in a crash". She remembers when I had just bought a Garmin 530 and set up that feature. My fault for not telling her I picked a different bike computer that didn't have that feature....but a reminder that it's a real feature that other people really do want.
I'm ok by the way. Lucky I had a good group of people with me and a good samaritan got me back home so I could get to the hospital.

+1 for ANGI support. We have several club members here in Southern California, with ANGI equipped helmets. All the club members have either Garmin or Wahoo computers. I am the first to get the new Hammerhead Karoo 2. What should my response be when someone asks if Hammerhead supports ANGI??
I am a bit surprised there has not been a response from the S/W development team at Hammerhead on this important safety issue. It has been crickets......
We really need ANGI + Karoo + SIM + SMS / auto message/email !!
