Turn by turn in power save mode bugs and requests
AnsweredThe Karoo 2 is becoming my goto device for rides in unfamiliar territory, where I have to actually navigate based on a route. By using power save mode, I can comfortably rely on the battery lasting throughout all day rides, but there are some nagging issues:
1. The turn by turn beep signal is inconsistent. In maybe 10-20% of cases it will not beep, although the screen lights up, so the device clearly knows there is a turn. I sometimes miss the turn, and only realize it when the device starts beeping about having re-routed me.
2. When approaching a turn, I first get the beep. Then it takes about half a second for the screen to light up, then another half second before the screen has refreshed itself to show the actual location and chevrons. This is a second where I'm distracted and not paying 100% attention to where I'm going. I wish that the calculations were all done in advance, the screen would light up, refreshed, and beep at the same time.
3. If I have zoomed in or out, this can lead to unpredictable behavior. If I'm really zoomed out, I might not be able to make out the details of where to turn. If I'm really zoomed in, I will just see the section I'm on, and have to keep watching the screen for the upcoming intersection to come into view. I really wish there was a standard zoom level that would be applied when a turn is approaching
4. Not related to the subject header, but I find that when point 1 above happens, i.e. I miss a turn, the Karoo will so happily re-route me that I sometimes find it really difficult to figure out where to go in order to get back to the actual route I wanted to go. The chevrons disappear, and I guess sometimes I'm zoomed in as per point 3 but don't realize it. I wish there was a really easy option to say "I really want to stick to the original route" instead of being re-routed (which is also useful in many scenarios)

Hello Ola,
I am happy to address your points.
With #2, we have heard similar feedback from other community members. I am actually organizing those suggestions and comments to present to our software team and will add your experience to that. I have been testing it recently and I am familiar with the behavior. With the way the battery save works, the calculations and redraws are at a lower refresh rate when the screen is off. The same mechanism that wakes the screen back up is also what shifts the refresh rates back to normal speeds. It will be more difficult to have the refresh rates resume prior to the screen waking up so I am unsure how quickly, if at all, the team would be able to implement that, but I am suggesting that behavior. Something that may be a quicker fix to put in place would be the timing of the beep. In my own testing, the beep is what prompts me to look down - if the screen woke up, refreshed, and beeped as it was, I would look down and it would already be refreshed and correct. I feel that would alleviate most of the issue.
#3 - We have had similar suggestions to this, as well as flipping back to the map at a prescribed zoom level if you are on a different page when a turn is coming up. I'm adding your suggestion as an upvote.
#4 - It is true, when you leave the route it will reroute you back to the route but it may be a few miles down the road before you rejoin. It looks for the safest route that will add as little as possible to your route. If you want to join at a specific point or backtrack to the route, the easiest way is to long-press on the route at the area you want to rejoin - you will drop a pin and have the option to route to it - here is the article on creating an offline route. The Karoo will take the best route to that specific point. When you are back on route, you can simply tap the red x at the top of the screen to end the offline route and you will continue on your originally planned route from that point.
And finally, #1. The beep should be consistent. I have not observed such issues with mine not making a tone. That is something that I will pay attention to in my upcoming rides. If you continue to experience that, please log a ticket with support and include your Karoo's serial number and a FIT file from a ride where you observed it happen - you can download a ride's file from the Dashboard - instructions. It would be helpful if you were able to note the intersection/distance into the ride you were so that part of your ride can be investigated.
Thanks!

Same here. This is sooo annoying. This had to be fixed definitely.
