Dependency on online services, offline use and API
AnsweredHi, looks like a nice device. However the week I decided to order it, the outage of the Dashboard happened, demonstrating how the Karoo depends on online services to run properly, and this really made me think twice.
There were some messages from HH employees in other threads stating that "We have also raised this as serious and high-priority feedback to our product team to implement an option on the Karoo to allow offline activity/route upload." I would like to know if this has progressed well and if the reliance on an online service is being addressed, not only in a way that ensures the dashboard server has redundancy, but that the device itself does not become unusable or crippled if the server disappears).
Also, is it possible to get an API, and allow more openness so that 3rd party providers, in particular open-source developers, can extend / access the device itself?

Hi Eric, thank you for your interest in the Karoo 2. We have made progress and have dedicated more efforts to improve the dependencies with better systems in place to alarm us ahead of time. However, I would also like to state that these are complex systems interacting with each other, and in this current and technology-dependent world, there may be times where servers crash. But I assure you that we are always on top of it, and even if it takes time - we are working hard on it, to get them back up and running. When this happened the last time, the device was not completely unusable though, you could record your rides and store them to be uploaded to 3-rd party once the services resumed.
There are definitely plans to share the public API with the community, but we need to ensure our tools and resource management aren't impacted when we do so. In short, only when we are confident we are in a position to do that. Right now, we aren't there yet.

I just found the forum.
I just found this thread. As of Jan 2025 I got an direct support answer:
I completely understand that internet connectivity can be a challenge in certain areas. Rest assured, I’ve shared your feedback with our team for further consideration. While I can’t provide a timeline at this moment, your input is greatly valued, and we’re always striving to improve.
Seriously?
Also I found POI Import requests 5 years old or so... Still no feature available. That's: Nogood ;((
