Issue with calculated distance with tunnels
AnsweredHi,
I rode a long ride with a lot of tunnels (east side of Garda Lake, Italy) and at the end I had 11km less than the real route.
With my previuos device (Garmin Oregon) , the device was able to add (by interpolation I guess) the distance missing between the begine and the end of the tunnel (without using speed sensor).
Also: if I open the FIT file with other tools (GPXSee for exaple), it show me the correct distance with the km missed in the device.
The same happens to me with Karoo1 and to a mate with Karoo 2.
Is this issue already raised?

Thanks for posting. As most of you mentioned, the affected rides were in tunnels & with no speed sensor connected to Karoo 2. This would be a strong reason why the distance values are discrepant. The Karoo 2 does not write the speed & distance values onto the FIT file if the GPS data is missing. When riding through the tunnels the device would have lost the GPS signal.Having a speed sensor in such cases would help in getting more accurate data on distance /speed.We have shared this with the product team where a predictive algorithm could be run to counter the loss of GPS speed/distance data.

Hi,
The issue still persists on the Karoo 2 - riding through Norway with lots of tunnels, this isn’t ideal. Komoot, for example, automatically calculates the speed in tunnels by connecting the start and end point and then calculating distance divided by time needed - quite simple. This would be really helpful! -
BTW it is the west side of lake Garda but still the same. Taking 11k from a ride is extremely frustrating but seeing this bug not fixed after 2 years is even more.
I would not expect me saying this, but I am happy I recorded the track also on my Garmin Fenix. My partner’s Garmin FR955 did also very well and the old Edge 1030+ just missed a little.
If you need any of these fit files for fixing that, I am happy to provide. -
Obviously not. End of September I was on cycling holiday in South Tyrol with numerous tunnels and still I am missing the referring distance. My Edge 840 was in repair and I liked to have again the navigation experience of the Karoo. But this is quite a no go, so it stays the backup device.
