Karoo 2 charging port melted during normal charging, is this a known issue?
I want to share what happened with my Karoo 2, and ask whether others have seen the same.
The device was charging overnight on a standard USB-A to USB-C cable, from a charger rated 5V / 2.4A, within the Karoo 2's stated 5V / 2.5A limit. The unit was dry and undamaged. In the morning, the charging port had melted and the cable had fused into it. It happened unattended, indoors, overnight.
Looking through this forum, I can see I'm not alone, there are multiple threads about the Karoo 2 port overheating, melting and burning cables (for example the "Defective USB port on Karoo 2" and "Karoo 2 USB port replacement" threads). Given that, and given there's no official repair service, I think this deserves a clearer answer from Hammerhead.
Questions for the community and Hammerhead:
- Has anyone had this resolved, in or out of warranty?
- Is the port on the newer Karoo actually redesigned, or is the cover kit the only change?
- Can Hammerhead sell the replacement port as a spare part for those who want a repair?
