Function "Add -> Import Route" fails for many gpx files
AnsweredHello,
For over 1 year now I have been mentioning in personal correspondence with Hammerhead that many .gpx files which I download from internet sites are not uploadable to my dashboard via "Add -> Import Route". The importer just fails, silently, and refuses to import the .gpx file.
Yes, I can:
- Import the .gpx file into Garmin Basecamp, then export it again, and that is uploadable to the dashboard
- Import the .gpx file into Gps Visualizer, then export it again, and that is uploadable to the dashboard
However if I'm on the road and do not have my laptop, only my phone, this becomes difficult.
The "Add -> Import Route" function needs to be made much more tolerant so that it does not simply fail when the .gpx file contains data it does not understand; rather, it should proceed to extract the set of x,y,z coordinates that make up the heart of the track.
It should never fail.
--> I can upload a sample .gpx file that can be imported perfectly into Garmin Basecamp but is always rejected by the "Add -> Import Route" function, as an attachment, if you show me how.
Thanks!

Hi Mark, we have tried to incorporate all the GPX file and correct the formatting errors. However, there are always some of them that do not fall under the standard that's accepted by our Dashboard. If you can send these files with us, we would love to correct them for you. I understand this would be much more difficult when you are on the field, and perhaps connecting your Karoo 2 via hotspot to your Phone, and upload these on Strava/RidewithGPS for the URL import - it could serve as a workaround.

Hi Ali,
Sorry but that is not really an answer.
I'm importing a completely standard .gpx file.
Garmin Basecamp can correctly process it.
Gps Visualizer can correctly process it.
I don't have or need Strava / RidewithGPS.What needs to be done is for your software to properly handle errors during the import of .gpx, .kml, etc. files, such that the X / Y / Z coords of the track are not thrown away. A junior programmer dealing with XML files for the first time would be able to attain this with a little effort!
I certainly don't wish to send such files to Hammerhead, on a routine basis, as a response will take days and I need to import within seconds.
I cannot reply to the email for this chat - how can I upload a sample .gpx file that fails the dashboard import test so you can see the trouble I'm having?
Best, Mark -
Hi Mark, could you please send that to support@hammerhead.io?

Hi Ali,
I have sent a test .gpx to support@hammerhead.io.

I am also having this problem, as are many others. I can import my gpx files into programs like MemoryMap, Outdoor Active, Kamoot etc. without any problem; but the Karoo 2 will simply not accept them. It really is not good enough that this problem has been reported at least 3 years ago but still nothing has been done to address it.
Is there any progress on the situation?

I also failed to import gpx files generated by Outdooractive into the Karoo dashboard.
Here is a solution that works for me: https://karoousers.org/viewtopic.php?t=1360
Could the Hammerhead team take care of the "metadata block problem"??
