December Map Update
Have been implored to update the maps as well as the firmware on my Karoo 1 a week or so back, I finally gave in. However, I was getting some very strange things happening while I was doing the update. BTW I had only the Japan map loaded.
First of all, while I left the Karoo to update on its own, it ended up say 'not enough space' (something like that, can't remember the exact message), and didn't do the update. About 4.6MB out of 9MB showed as used though. I tried this several times and it was consistent, including after doing a restart. I then deleted the Japan basemap and tried again. Twice it would not load the map but third time around it did. I kept the Karoo open on the Offline Maps page, and watched it - several times the progress bar went almost all the way to 9MB, and then dropped back down again, with progress bar updates seemingly only happening when I put pressed the on/off button briefly to switch the display off/on. Eventually, the Japan base map did load, but I lost quite a bit of time doing that update.

Yeah, the map update process was definitely weird this time, certainly more so than previous times. Getting the update process to start was confusing in the first place, it just went to the list of regions and did nothing for quite a while. And after that I got the space errors as well (I had more maps than you but was at 14 GB used before the update and 15 GB after), a few random regions appeared on the list initially as failed downloads (others as completed or pending), but in the end even those regions updated automatically for me after the others had finished. I think your download might have failed simply because of network issues at either end, but with the current UI it’s obviously impossible to tell.
At least two improvements would be useful in the future: an actual download progress bar for each region, and making sure that failed downloads don’t restart from zero if a substantial part of the file was already downloaded.

Indeed the map update was not a good user experience... I had the same issue with maps that were failing because of the storage being full. I chose to remove nearly all maps to be able to complete, but reading the first post perhaps the failing maps would still update after all if I had just waited.

Yeah, as long as you have at least 5 GB free (or whatever it takes to store the second (downloaded) copy of your largest map plus some safety margin), you should not have to delete anything. It is almost as if the map update process is trying to do several regions at once, which seems like a bad idea for several reasons.
