Sync Ride Data Directly to Apple Health
AnsweredCurrently to sync workouts with Apple Health I sync my rides to Strava and then the Strava App app on my iPhone syncs to Apple Heath. This works except Strava does not sync heart rate data unless the workout was recorded with Strava app.
I do wear a HR strap to record heart rate with the K2 and confirmed when viewing the ride in Training Peaks.
Are there plans to allow syncing rides directly to Apple Health through the HealthKit?

i just got a karoo2. definitely require direct integration with apple health app. i've been biking 50 years. just got a Specialized aethos with sram force. used a bunch of bike computers. need 1 system of record for all workouts. iphone/ios has over a billion users. i don't like or use strava and do not want an intermediary between my bike computer and apple. this must be supported.

I switched to Karoo 2 from Wahoo several months ago. While I love the mapping features and the ability to use the unit without an associated app, it is frustrating that I have to send my ride data through strava to apple health. This wouldn’t be an issue if Strava would send the correct heart rate info. I recently began using a training/recovery app that reads data from apple health. Without the correct HR data the app is useless. Is there any hope of karoo apple health integration in the near future? I am glad I didn’t sell my wahoo because I’m going to have to go back.

It has now been two years since the original post and still no native integration with Apple Health, no calories on the fit file export. Are you people even working on this? I really want to get of the Garmin Ecosystem, I did for the watch, but the cycling computer, Karoo just has too many things lacking on the software side. Like many here I dont want to to use Strava, I want my device to sync to the native platform I use.

At least if you use a powermeter there is a (another manual sync) solution on the horizon, c.f. here.

Idk why this seems to be so complicated or it is unclear how important it is for end users. Cannot imagine anyone who uses the apple eco system who does not want this?
Look at peloton they are doing this via the gymkit quite some time and it works flawlessly. Easy heartrate display in realtime, no HR strap etc.

The official communication was two years ago and hasnt been updated. Can we at least get another "Official" we have no plans.
Like most everyone that is commenting, I too have a need for this type of sync. I came from the Garmin ecosystem where all my activities and weight and sleep stats were in one place. Now that I have the new Apple Ultra watch I have left the Garmin world and now rely on apple health to capture all of my data. Exercise, heart rate, pulse ox, sleep, blood pressure etc. the list is long. It is very disappointing that I have to rely on another company to sync my hammerhead ride to the apple ecosystem.

Brian for the meantime I recommend you download and instead HealthFit app, it doesn’t cost much and its great at syncing all different apps into apple health and vice versa.
I do an export from Karoo Dashboard and import that fit file using the app, it now can correctly also calculate the calories as long as you use a power meter on the rides.
And yes incredibly, the fit export from Karoo does not contain the calories..horrible.

I could be wrong, but I suspect the reason this has not been done is because a client application (e.g. running on your iPhone) using HealthKit is required for this to happen. Said another way, I do not believe there is a web-based version of HealthKit that another web-based app (e.g. the Hammerhead dashboard) can use to pass HealthKit data back into the Apple Health app.
That said, now that Hammerhead is part of SRAM, there is a SRAM mobile app. It might be nice to introduce Karoo specific functionality into that app. While not a trivial effort, it would (potentially) provide for a lot of the capabilities folks in this forum have been asking for, such as Apple Health support, personal in-ride tracking (eliminating the need for a separate SIM/data plan), team member tracking, etc.

@mike morper - no, there is no need for an iOS app to trigger HealthKit or rather GymKit. The Peloton for example also runs on the Android system. There you only hold your Apple Watch to the camera on the display and after confirming on the Apple Watch, it is connected and mirrors the Workout on the Apple Watch including heart rate data etc to the Peloton! As an official apple workout on the watch is leveraged, obviously the data is synced back to Apple Health as soon as the workout / ride is finished. I do believe this should be possible with bluetooth, wifi or whatever is the prerequisite for gymkit.

Right, but in that case isn’t there an app to app connection (peloton app on the Android tablet to the - I’m assuming - Fitness app on the watch?) HealthKit is present on the Watch, right? I could be wrong, but I believe all HealthKit data updates must take place on an iOS or watchOS device.
in example, I have a scale that supports HealthKit. When I stand on the scale, the Apple Health app doesn’t immediately update. Instead, I must open the scale’s iOS app where the data from the scale is slurped up and written out to the HealthKit service API. Then, the next time I open the Health app, that data from the scale is present. Obviously I had to setup the scale’s iOS app is a data source first.

+1 Please register another strong request for direct Apple Health support. With the addition of ride and workout data now available in the iOS app, it appears the groundwork to add HealthKit support is there. Really hoping it will be available soon and it would be nice if Hammerhead can chime in.
I believe the new Karoo is the best bike computer available today. Certainly the frequency and quality of the firmware updates have been commendable.

I just did my own post on this before seeing this thread.I just got a Karoo 3 but was shocked to find it does not integrate with Apple health. Pretty much everything else does. Hammerheads silence speaks volumes about their attitude towards their customers. I think I should probably return it and get another Garmin.

Syncing with Apple health is table stakes for any connected fitness device these days and has been for a while. I was pretty surprised Karoo doesn't do this. Along with not recording calories without a power meter which I'm not about to buy just for that. People have been asking for Apple health integration for four years! I can't imagine what the hold up is.
I sent an email to hammerhead and they replied a day later on a Sunday so bonus for them. I had already considered retuning it just because this is a basic feature these days and after all this time I assumed they just decided not to bother no matter what their customers ask. Or more likely they choose not to for some reason since it's not a difficult integration to do. Anyway this is what they said;

Hi Dear,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us. I truly appreciate your feedback.
I completely understand how beneficial direct integration with Apple Health would be, and I agree that it could significantly enhance our Karoo.
Unfortunately, we don't have a timeline to share at this moment, but I genuinely appreciate your patience and understanding. I’ve made sure to pass your suggestion along to our product team, and if they see an opportunity, they may reach out to you directly.
We are excited about the plans we have for future improvements that will help our community become more engaged in the development of Karoo and its features. Given that we operate on Android, there are many exciting possibilities for community-driven apps and features that we want to explore further down the line. We hope to start making progress this upcoming year.
In the meantime, I want to suggest that you upload your rides directly to Strava, which can then be integrated into Apple Health. This can be a helpful workaround for now.So yeah, better than no answer. I have no desire to get an account on Strava for this though. Especially since Starva has thrown privacy overboard in pursuit of more money. For now I'll record on both the Hammerhead and my Apple Watch Ultra when I go on a ride.
