Wobbly Quarter-turn Adapter

    @chris my observation is exactly the same. I believe it's the manufacturing tolerance of K2's garmin adapter.

    I inspected the genuine Garmin mount vs. K2's adapter and K2 is 0.4 mm smaller in diameter than the original Garmin. Even tho this doesn't seem as a lot, it definitely contributes in the wobbliness we are seeing.

    Received the new bracket this morning.
    So now I have 2 brackets which I don't use and 1 Garmin adapter which I want to use but is wobbly.

    I use the official Garmin out front mount and I don't have any wobbling or movement at all with it? I only received my K2 a few days ago so (unlikely) have they updated the adapter maybe?

    I have confirmation that the adapter hasn't changed. I also have an original Garmin out front mount.

    That's strange then. I'll go check with my other bikes K Edge mount

    Edit: So my other bike has another Garmin out front mount (replaced the K Edge when I bought the Garmin front light with its own mount) and used fairly significant sideways pressure and could feel a very very slight movement.  When I tried it before I used what I thought was fairly reasonable pressure but couldn't feel anything.

    So yeah, there is movement. Got my Garmin 830 and there was none at all. Could actually feel a difference when first inserting the Garmin - it felt stiffer.

    That said short of crashing, I'm not sure if the K2 could possibly dislodge itself, even over rough terrain.

    I'm using a HideMyBell outfront. No wobbling issues with the adapter.

    @Damon,

    In your specific situation it sounds like you have a little "play". On my Easton Integrated mount (attaches into a cutout of the stem), it literally rattles audibly when you hit a bump. It is THAT loose that I wouldn't use it without the lanyard (just in case it works its way out of the mount). And that is with the "o-ring" solution. Finally, I'll reiterate that when I use a Garmin with the same Easton mount, there is no play at all.

    Where I'm getting frustrated is that HH has admitted their original 1/4 turn isn't to the right specifications, and that they are designing a replacement, but it's been 2-3+ months and no updates, aside from stating to use the o-ring workaround.

    Get us a permanent fix HH!

    @Chris Yeah that doesn't sound good at all, that much movement.

    I wonder why there is a difference in peoples mounts though? The adapter should be physically the same size for all of us, and the out front mounts are presumably built with the same spec connector (the garmin mount) in mind?

    When I visibly compare the K2 1/4 mount to my Garmin (mount is part of the actual device base), it looks like the "height/depth" of the circular post is greater on the K2 1/4 mount. I suspect the intent of the o-ring is to reduce the additional space.

    Submit a ticket, and they'll send you a less wobbly one. Even the new one has a little play on my easton integrated out front mount.

    @chris
    You received a new quarter turn adapter from Hammerhead?
    When I asked for one I got a complete new mount instead since there was no redeveloped adapter.

    @Jos.

    Correct, I submitted a ticket requesting a replacement 1/4 mount (since original was too loose) a little over a week ago and they sent me a new 1/4 mount. Definitely better fitting, but still a small amount a play (at least it doesn't rattle now) when I use it on my Easton ISC mount.

    Got a replacement today.
    Must be a revised version. In the original there's a number "1" in one of the quarter holes on the bottom. The one I received today had number "2" in it.
    The old one measures 25,10 mm for the adapter diameter. The new one 25,00 mm.
    Also the 2 flaps measure 28,28 mm on the old one and 28,68 mm on the new one.
    So although the diameter shrink a little (which would make the gap bigger since it's the male part), the 2 flaps increased by 0,4 mm.
    The fit is definitely better, a better snap when locking.
    I am confident to ride with it now, however, I will still use the lanyard since it much bigger and heavier than my previous Garmin 510.

    That would probably explain why I haven't had any issues - my mount that I received with my Karoo 2 a couple months ago has the 2 on it as well.

    Interesting...I received a replacement and it has a 1 on it as well, which explained why it wasn't much better.

    Not saying for a fact that there are different version but as a mechanical engineer I can say that 0,4 mm is too much of a difference coming out of the same injection mould. The numbers would logically explain the revisions.
    Would be great if someone from HH could shed a light on this.

    My adapter which has a tiny amount of play when forced, but no wobble in either Garmin mounts is a 1. I can't measure to the degree of accuracy Jos has.

    Not saying all Raceware products are bad. This is just my experience, so be aware. K2 mount failed on me after just  several rides, the entire mount flew of the bike during a decent. This mount was for Vision Metron 5D ACR.

    K2 kind of survived.

    Anyway, the mounting for K2 is the only issue I have and its continuing being very annoying indeed.

    @Alfons Plasil - > Wow! It takes knowledge - to design a good mount 'for any type of handlebar'. The energy (forces) must be properly catched / be neutralized.

    I did some printing for the Karoo style mount in order to work off my other accessories but I just wasn't feeling the strength or performance compared to the supplied mount.  Printed ABS and PETG and got the snap to work well but in the end just ordered the updated Garmin 1/4 turn.  Much snugger than the original and now feels similar to any other garmin style accessory.  Once more companies start designing for the new style I'll consider converting back over, but for now this just makes the most sense for me.

    Has the quarter turn hardware shipped with new units these days been changed? Or is an O-ring or other solution still recommended?

    edit: typo

    Dear lawd. The official comment is to use an o-ring?? Instead of fixing the issue. 😂

    Create a support ticket. They will send you the new design adapter which fits like a glove.

    I fixed mine by swinging by the bike shop and the mechanic dug through a bin of 1/4 turn adapters plates and found a Garmin (branded) adapter that is thicker than most. Unscreen the adapter from my Shimano PRO out front mount and screwed in the thicker Garmin one. No more rattling.
