[OUTAGE] Strava upload/import issues
An incident of delayed uploads was raised today https://status.strava.com/incidents/rztqnhmsst1b
We believe it is affecting Karoo devices as well, as there is no outage on the Hammerhead servers. We are closely monitoring all the systems for any failure on our end.

Happens to me every other ride. Super frustrating!!
Pay up, HH (https://developers.strava.com/docs/rate-limits/#:~:text=Strava%20API%20usage%20is%20limited,may%20need%20to%20be%20adjusted)!

It’s not great for the average user who has just bought a £350 cycling computer to not be able to upload to the biggest site out there without downloading Fit files which got old in 2014.
Ive seen postings saying it’s an issue Strava side, but after I couldn’t get my ride uploaded, I downloaded the fit file, uploaded to garmin and it synced with Strava in a SECOND.
I then tried syncing the ride with Strava from the K2 and dashboard and just got the errors again.
This really should be higher priority than it seems to be to HH with threads going back 3 months on this issue.

The issue is intermittent and is definitely not resolved. HH is basically hitting the daily Strava API limits and needs to figure this out via a vendor subscription. When the weather was cold and traffic was scarce, there was no issue but as soon as good weather hit the US, we're suddenly having the API limits with Strava. This reminds me of some older Strava apps that uses to run out of the daily API limits and simply stopped working. HH - if you want to keep your user base, please pay whatever must be paid to Strava.
-
Hi All, this is not good, frustrating and I apologise on behalf of the Hammerhead team. I have raised this as a matter of urgency to look if this is connected with the daily usage limit or is something odd for any other reason. Thank you for the patience. As of now, try the workaround to upload the file manually or by disconnecting and reconnecting the Strava account.

Pretty sure this issue is not related to the Hammerhead software updates, per se, so please don't all immediately jump on the "Hammerhead software is rubbish" bandwagon. It's not quite as simple as that.
As has already been suggested at least once in this thread, Strava imposes API rate limits to software vendors that use their public API to transfer data to the Strava platform. You can read more about if here if you are that way inclined:
https://developers.strava.com/docs/rate-limits/
It's likely that Hammerhead are hitting the rate limits that Strava has imposed on them. It follows that when you start to sell more devices, you get more users. And when the weather starts to improve, those users are out on their bikes and wanting to upload their activities to Strava. It seems that the rate limits are being reached much sooner than they were a few months ago, largely due to an increase in the size of the Hammerhead user base over the last few months.
I'm guessing this is the reason why some of you are having issues uploading to Strava. Official confirmation from Hammerhead would be welcomed, in order to prevent further speculation on the reliability of their software updates.
The reason why you are not having the same issues uploading a FIT file is because this does not utilise the Strava API. It bypasses the API entirely and you can probably upload as many FIT files as you like (within reason). Obviously, this is nowhere near as convenient as uploading directly from the Hammerhead platform.
Hopefully Hammerhead will negotiate new rate limits with Strava as a matter of urgency to prevent this problem from getting any worse. The more people use the device - and want to upload their ride data to to Strava - the worse this problem will get.
Hold tight, and don't necessarily jump to blame the device; It's improved a lot in the last few updates.

Same problem here, never had this on my K1, and my thursday ride uploaded (pre update) fine, now I get the Strava Client Error. Tried to disconnect and reboot all accounts and units, but that doesn`t help at all, The K2 says:
HX Datasync Service Ride Upload Strava Client Error.
Trying to upload from HH Dashboard doesn`t work either, it says :
Cannot upload this FIT file (Error: other error).
-
You wouldn't have had this on your K1 because Hammerhead didn't have as many users back then and likely would not have got close to the Strava API rate limits.
Like I said above, this has nothing to do with the latest software update at all. Likewise, there is nothing you can do - as a user - to fix this by either disconnecting and reconnecting your accounts or whatever so I really wouldn't waste your time with any of that.
Syncing with Strava from the Karoo is using the API. Syncing from the Dashboard is also using the API. Strava will impose the rate limit on any clients that attempt to use the API and will simply block any requests that are over the rate limit, which is why you are seeing the HX Datasync errors.
It's one of those things you're just going to have to sit out until Hammerhead negotiate new API rate limits with Strava.

Having the same problems as everyone today. Problem is not the new build. I had not installed it and still got the Strava client error. I then installed the new build and am still getting it. Also, cant "sync to" strava from the dashbard, get the "cannot upload FIT error". Worked fine two days ago.
-
This issue have not anything to do whit our units. If your tries to upload any old rides on the website you get same error.
Have had issue with Sufferfest today. And they had informed both in app and Facebook that they have problem. https://www.facebook.com/groups/TourofSufferlandria/permalink/4146685135356001/So for best customer experience Hammerhead please inform us instead hide.

The workaround is simple. Click the hamburger menu on your ride in the hammer.io dashboard and select download .fit file instead of sync with Strava. Switch to Strava and press the + at the top right and select upload fit file. Select the file you just downloaded and click save. Inconvenient but done in 60 seconds.
-
I have the same issue. No rides will sync to strava, but they do sync to training peaks straight from the unit. I was able to download the .fit file and upload that as a work around for now.
New starred segments also won't sync to the karoo 2. All my old ones are there and working but it just won't grab any new ones I star on strava. I tried disconnecting strava and logging back in but still no luck. Hopefully the issues with strava integration can be sorted out soon because the strava live segments on the karoo 2 were a major selling point for me.

Seems very likely what Steve and others in this thread are saying re the API limits. I can imagine there are a lot more users now than previously what with the press attention they’ve been getting.
Which makes it doubly important HH get on top of this. Bad first impressions and word of mouth on a new product is hard to shake off.
I also agree it’s annoying that Strava imposes these api restrictions on premium users (as I am too) but they are like a brick wall when it comes to feedback so.
-
Another thing I'd like to mention - this has nothing to do with the device itself or HH firmware bugs. In my humble opinion, this is the most cutting edge platform in bike computing out there just needs time to figure out some issues and get into the normal development cadence without breaking an already existing functionality

One more +1; brand new HH K2, despite years of Garmin and now I’m carrying my 820 in my jersey pocket. Definitely not the way I’d like to go. After nothing syncing over the weekend, was able to force (??) it to sync today (and that wasn’t possible yesterday) so maybe it’s almost fixed?
Hope this is a high high priority for HH, I do t want to carry two bike computers, and whether it takes me 60 seconds or 60 minutes to “do it myself manually” isn’t really the point, this alone would have been reason enough for me to get a 1030.
Not that it matters, but also a +1 for paid Strava user.

My Karoo will not even upload or connect to my Dashboard. How can this not be resolved? Initial K1 purchaser group, and I went through all the original teething issues with continual glitches. It was finally working fine last summer, and now my first spring ride will not connect despite resetting Karoo and uploading latest update ( was that my mistake?)

In another thread someone mentioned that since the last update, the device is silently getting logged out of your dashboard account. I have seen it happen a couple of times too. The only way I noticed was when I pulled down the top menu and it said something like "You are logged out, please log back in to access your cloud services". I have logged a bug against this. But wondering if this could be the cause behind a lot of the issues with uploading rides.
