Hiking profile
AnsweredHi there,
Is there any hiking specific profile? I mean, i plan to use the karoo not only for my biclycle but also for hiking and would like to see those "rides" as "hikes" instead.
All activities recorded with the karoo 2 seem to save and upload as bike rides. Say you want it for hiking or that you want to record or any other outdoor sport, how do you tell karoo or dashboard it was not a bike ride?
Think of wikiloc, before you start recording an activity you're prompted to choose what type of activity you're doing. If one uses the k2 for bike 99% of times maybe you don't need/want that, but at least we could have dedicated profiles for other sports.

Hi Perchera, there is no Hiking profile as of now, and I am sorry that there's nothing planned in the near term o long term. That being said, the software is constantly evolving - and if we get enough interest from the community, and value - we would surely like to explore this world.

I also think a "Hiking" profile would be a useful feature. The K2 is small and light enough to make a perfect hiking GPS and it already comes with a lanyard. I will definitely use it for hiking on days where I'm not riding and would love to have the ability to upload as a hike/walk instead of a ride.

@Markus, good idea, setting a "fake bike" as hiking.
I was thinking of some more settings like minimum speed for example. For biking anything below 0,5kms hour is usually considered a stop/pause and recording by seconds is fine but for hiking the speed is usually lower and we might want to record by meters (say 5m) instead of by secs, but yeah, your trick might work if we don't have a specific hiking profile.
Anyways i upload most of my rides and hikes to Connect and Wikiloc which are my main activities logs. Not so worried about how HH will display my activities but more about how HH treats activities that are considerably different (hiking vs riding)

Adding my vote for this feature, but in a more generalized "other-activities" format. Over the last winter I've used my Karoo 2 as a data logger while X-C skiing (Skijoring, technically) and it has worked great for that, aside from not having a better way to tag such activities. Like Marcus, I figured out I could add "X-C skis" as a "bike", which works, but is a bit of a hack.
Hammerhead's own marketing recently includes a video of someone X-C skiing! Perhaps you should ask Rose Grant if she would use the Hammerhead as a data logger when she's skiing, rather than biking: ttps://www.hammerhead.io/blogs/teamjournal/rose-grant-see-the-road-ahead
I've been using a Polar Vantage V for several years now as my all-around data logger, including for skijoring, but technology sometimes hiccups or even fails, so I always have a backup running. Previously that's been my phone, but the Karoo 2 is an even better backup solution because of the altimeter. The Karoo 2's altimeter has finer resolution than the Vantage, and has ANT+ connectivity, so it's my preferred source for Strava uploads.

Hiking would be great. I am currently training for the Grand Canyon Rim 2 Rim in 1 day. Would love to use a Karoo 2 as my training device. But, my usage would ideally have a twist, which is Strava Live segments for running activities.
Running activity support is key, because I currently have a Garmin Edge 530, but it will not download my starred SLS running segments to the 530 (I guess because it is a "cycling" device). It will only download "cycling" SLS segments. Furthermore, I can only create cycling segments from cycling activities, and running segments from running activities. But again, running segments don't download to the device from Garmin connect. And finally, it's pointless to try to hike against SLS created from a bike activity because my time will be so much faster from the bike. The point is to try to better my hiking times over my previous hikes, not my bike PR over the same segment.
I'd say that if the Karoo 2 will download Strava running segments, and its device Live Segment feature will fire and pace me against the my segment running PR, I will most certainly buy a new Karoo 2.
Has anyone tried this, or can confirm that this does or does not work?
Thanks in advance.

Feature wise you're correct but an app isn't a computer. That's the whole point in cycling computers otherwise we'd see only phones on peoples handlebars. That's why some sort of hiking or multi profile would be a great addition.
The Karoo is water and dust resistant, smaller and lighter than most modern phones and has mounting capability built into the body. The advantages are numerous. I'm comparing to a dedicated handheld gps unit more than a smartphone. -
@Lee Irvine this is the approach to the implementation of tasks of this company. Four years and nothing has been done about it. You are right that you remind, but what of it? The worst thing is that we do not even know what they are working on from all these reports. I suggested a board of the type "to do list"/"tracking progress", but unfortunately there is no.

There is a clear answer from four years ago, which can be found in the second commentary. So what else is there to say? I am sure that the demand for a hiking profile on a bike computer was not so great that Hammerhead would have changed its mind. You won't find Hiking on an Edge either, so even in the vastness of the Garmin universe there is unlikely to be much demand for it.
And what is the purpose of a to-do list? Or a progress check? This is not a community product, so who is Hammerhead accountable to for potential new features? And there is more to the roadmaps with the development teams than some feature requests in this forum. You can find some older posts from Hammerhead about the feature implementation process. You won't get that info from Garmin, Wahoo or Bryton either because this sort of thing is always tricky. I remember Sigma promising new features for the Rox 12.1 evo on some German forums that never materialized. Things like that can harm the reputation a product. Sometimes Suunto or Polar or Coros release a preview of upcoming updates for the year, but there is always a business reason behind it, to show that their products will also get essential features that the competition already has. But they also don't publish to do lists or a tracking progress.

Funny how people with the least imagination have the most opinions about how everyone else should think.
Also seems to align with being naively trusting in technology to never fail and not considering the need for backups.
The amount of effort Hammerhead staff has put into ignoring this thread is probably more than it would have taken someone to add a hiking profile in the first place.

Do you have X-ray vision? Because if you don't that might explain why you never see people using bike computers as secondary data loggers! They never have them out to be seen! Unless you're rummaging through their gear, you'd never know.
"Also, it's really easy to ignore something or someone and it takes no effort. Let me show you....."
Which is interesting coming from someone who sealioned into this thread to complain about everyone else's opinions in the first place!

Sorry for the noise, folks! Looks like FF has deleted their comments. I wasn't just ranting at the clouds. Originally, they posted:
Why would anyone use a bike computer for hiking? Pretty much everyone has a smartphone and there are a number of apps that are better suited to hiking and offer offline solutions. I would be annoyed if HH wasted their time on a feature like this.
Then followed up with:
You are funny. I live in the alps, hike and bike a lot, and I can honestly say that I have never seen a single person using their bike computer for hiking. Get the tools made for the job.
Also, it's really easy to ignore something or someone and it takes no effort. Let me show you.....
Anyhow, just wanted to clear that up.
FYI: I'm still using my Karoo2 as a secondary data logger, despite not having a hiking (or other) profile! It has better altitude resolution than my Polar Vantage V, which I will continue to wear until it's dead!

I use another gps, another brand, both for biking and hiking.
I undestand that HH is focused on biking only, top high technology biking.
Not my case. That's why i sold my HH and bought a less techy but more flexible device that i can use on casual mountain biking and also on hikes.
Not blaming HH for not having a hiking profile, but it would be nice to just reply "no, we will never have it, we're focused on biking".
Having that hiking profile would not hurt, but would open a door that they don't want to be open.

As reply to the deleted comment:
Why I would use Karoo instead of my phone:- Battery life is better and optimized for navigation, so my phone stays charged for calls, photos, or emergencies.
- It’s a dedicated GPS device that fits perfectly in my hand with the strap.
- More durable — built to handle rain and dust.
etc.
For "wasting HH resources on developing this function" — bro, there are very few new features added in recent firmware updates. Do you really think a simple dedicated hiking profile would be such a big deal?
