LiveTracking only works if your Karoo is always connected to the internet, which can be done by tethering it to your phone's wifi or by adding a SIM card with a data plan.

So pairing my Karoo 2 with my smartphone and using my carriers data plan won't work?

    Thanks

Tethering to your phones hotspot will work but Bluetooth pairing won’t.

That's bad, i mean, relying on a hotspot seems to me a bad idea.

I used my Karoo with a pre-paid sim card for livetrack, it worked pretty well and data use was minimal

If you need to hostpot from your mobile that means your phone's battery will drain... imagine a 3 or 6 hours ride hotspotting

Plus your karoo must be with wifi on all the time... not sure if the battery of the karoo will last longer livetracking with a sim card or wifi, both will use the battery of course.

Thanks for the feedback!  If you don't mind my asking how much did the Sim Card cost per month?

    Hi Mark,

In my case (Spain), i bought it from symio.es

3 euros = 2Gb (no calls included but there are other price combos with calls)

You do not need to load it every month (i think you need to do it every 6 months to keep it "alive")

So you basically load it only when you run out of megas, and you can load as little as 1 euro to start another 6 months period. Everything is done online or through the symio's app, pretty easy.

I guess there must be similar companies/plans in other countries. In Europe we're lucky to travel with our own number (no roaming charged) but when i travel to Morocco i usually buy a 10 euro sim with enough minutes and gigas for a week or two. Then i just dispose it.

    Regards

    Dear members,

do I understand correctly that in order to use live-tracking and message notification I must:

    - tether the Karoo 2 via WLAN with my iPhone and pair it via Bluetooth

    - install a mobile SIM and pair it via Bluetooth ?

Or is there any better way to achieve live-tracking and notification?

    Thanks and best regards

    @Dirk and @Colin

Nope, if you have a sim in the karoo 2 you do not need bluetooth nor a paired phone, the sim does the work

And i frankly don't understand if the hotspot is necessary when you do not have a sim. It makes more sense to me that the karoo 2 sends the data via bluetooth to the paired phone and the phone sends the livetracking info to the internet. But i can't confirm this, i no longer have the k2.

Antonio if you read his message he wants notifications also. That requires Bluetooth.

@Colin, oops, i did not see Dirk's mention to notifications. The original request by Mark spoke of livetracking only. Yes of course, if you need notifications then you need bluetooth.

In my humble opinion, grab your phone once in a while and check if there is any important notification. Having that many popups in a gps is a nightmare.

Why does it need hot spotting for live tracking? My garmin watch does live tracking just being paired (BT) with my phone?

Because the Karoo is technically a mobile device in itself, on Android OS. But there has to be a workaround. I can't for the life of me get my 3 mobile (UK) data SIM to work with my Karoo.

Another live tracking question:  I recently purchased a sim card from Freedompop as it was noted as being compatible with the Karoo 2.  I activated a Freedompop sim card and inserted it into the Bike Computer, but how to test out that it is working?  Does the Karoo 2 sense the sim card and automatically use that to connect?  Is there a setting that needs to be turned on?

    Thanks!

I am in the UK and I use a  3 mobile SIM in my K2 without any issues.  Check that it is seated properly in the carrier?  Mine didn't show the first time I inserted it, but then it was fine.

So after getting my new SIM card from 1pmobile (UK carrier) to work, I'm back here again!

Live tracking only shows from the moment that i turned it on, and isn't updating. I've gone for a quick ride, and it isn't updating, put it back on wifi/took it off wifi, and it is still showing "last update" which is 45 minutes ago.

On top of that, the position it thinks I was in then is a whopping 496.9 miles away from my real position. Anyone experiencing this... Live tracking would appear to be totally useless for me at the minute.

Yes, I am in Wisconsin - United States and after installing Freedompop sim card in my Karoo 2, the Karoo 2 shows a cellular signal but when I went for a ride it still shows me at the location where I rode 10 days ago (40 miles away) and does not update.  I did notice the Karoo 2 companion app on my smartphone had updated and the Karoo 2 was no longer paired with my smartphone.

Anyone know whether its necessary to pair the Karoo 2 with Smartphone via companion app for live tracking to work?

What companion app are you referring to? I didn’t think Karoo made any apps for smartphones?

I just tested this for the first time (also in the UK, Mark Ngui).

    1. I enabled Live Tracking on the K2
    2. A second or so later, I received an email with a unique URL to my live tracking map
    3. I clicked on the link in the email
    4. Map updated with my exact, current, location
    5. My K2 is currently connected to my home network via wi-fi but I have also just tested this using only the 4G connection via my Three PAYG Data SIM onboard

So, quite a different experience to you, Mark (although I can think of plenty worse places to cycle than the north coast of NI).

I'm not sure if this makes a difference at all, but I have "Location" enabled on my K2. You might want to check you also have this enabled and do the same.

If your K2 is only connected with your onboard SIM, then it's possible that your K2 is having issues communicating your exact location to the HH servers in order for them to update your location on the map. Probably worth disabling wi-fi (consider deleting the SSID from networks) on your K2 and checking to see that you are able to sync Routes and Rides correctly over 4G. Also worth checking that your K2 has a solid GPS connection (take it outdoors if you're unsure).

I am in California and also use a Freedompop sim. Mine works fine. I don't have a companion app. Live track only updates when you are recording a ride. If you have wifi, I think Live Track will update even if the sim isn't working. Check by recording a walk outside away from wifi.

Things to check: does the cell symbol on the Karoo show signal? mine usually says 3G or 4G in addition. If there is a line thru the symbol, did you enable cell data on the Karoo? If there is an 'x' then the service is not active. Did you update the APN settings on the Karoo? I don't know if this is necessary but I did after Googling 'freedompop sim set up'. I also had some confusion with Freedompop 'freemium' service. I ended up subscribing for $5/month so it wouldn't expire. Turns out 25MB/month is enough for me.

You only have to use a companion app if you have an Android phone (but the companion app is not required for Live Tracking to work).

No, you do not need to pair the K2 with a Smartphone via the Companion app, Mark Richardson; there is no companion app for iOS anyway.

My iPhone is not paired with my K2 and I am still getting an accurate location being reported via live tracking.

Thanks Joe Wang!  Very helpful.  I did not have mobile data enabled.  I also set up a APN for Freedompop although the Hammerhead instructions seemed to imply this is unnecessary.  I will test it out later this week.

Feedompop plans are confusing.  I am trying to not subscribe to a monthly plan so my hope is the data usage is minimal.

    Thanks again!

Yes Freedompop is confusing. I bought a sim card ($10 I think) and got it working. It worked well for a month and then stopped. That's because the 'free' plan expired after 1 month and didn't auto-renew. So I signed up for the $5/mo plan in the middle of my ride and it started working immediately. If you figure out how to use the 'free' plan and have it renew, let us know. Btw usage is about 1 to 1.5 MB per hour roughly.

Thanks Steve, but yes i have 4G and can upload and download via 4G (I have very good signal here, so haven't even seen 3G come up). Location services are obviously on!

ALL over 4G in the last 15 hours.

    1. Added new routes from Strava to Dashboard

    2. Uploaded K2 rides to web/dashboard

    3. Reset the link 4 times, and whilst my location is moving, i'm still showing as being somewhere in Northern Ireland!

    4. Turned it off

    5. Turned it back on, still with wifi OFF and data on

    6. Start ride and lo and behold, correct location - it works HOORAY!!!

I also just bought myself a new helmet (Prevail Vent, looks great!) with the ANGI sensor, so yet another link for the other half to follow. That one is perhaps a bit more useful as she'll get an SMS alert if I do have an accident... touch wood that never happens! Wonder if crash detection will come to the K2?

Update. I needed to create a new APN. There were two wrong entries in the Karoo. Now it works fine.

So maybe a few here need to check the APN Settings to fix it easily using a SIM.

    ---

    Hi Folks,

same here. It worked fine a few weeks ago. Now there is no way to get the Live Tracking Live without WiFi. Even Enable isn`t possible without Wlan.

I have a Sim-Card installed and checked all APN-Settings an so on. Mobile data is active.

I started a ride with Wifi. It is ok. I disabled wifi. No riding update. I started without Wifi. Nothing happens at all.

It is a very good feature. Even without using the phone pairing. But without the update it is not worth a cent :-)

Maybe it is a bug fix?

    Cheers Thom
