Ascent/elevation

Ascent gain has been worked on several times over last few months. My K2 is extremely consistent to Strava and Garmins. Last ride was only 6ft different to Strava. If you are experiencing 80% difference sounds more like hardware issue.

My K2 has also improved in this regard recently. My most recent ride - over a distance of ~60km - recorded an elevation gain of within 5 metres of the Strava elevation. I do not have a Garmin to compare it to.

Furthermore, when comparing points on the elevation profile of my completed rides against spot heights on British OS maps, I have found that the K2 is typically within one or two metres of the published spot heights on the map.

This is definitely one area that has improved of late.

    This was my last ride.
    K2: 126 m
    Strava: 73 m
    Makes no sense, I think

If the total gain is accumulated with a lot of very small climbs (less then few meters), I think this deviation is within the margin of errors.

But to be honest, when looking at my last three rides, no deviations:

    1) Strava 2m, HH 3m

    2) Strava 29m, HH 29m

    3) Strava 47m, HH 48m

    Hey Henk,

Thanks for posting, The Karoo 2 uses barometer-based metrics to arrive at the elevation calculations this can tend to slightly vary due to external factors such as the geography of the location whereas Strava or other platforms do have their own methods for calculating the elevation with the most popular one being GPS location device ascent calcuation.

We are working on making our values more accurate and closer to actual values :) If you still feel that your numbers are incorrect, I would urge you to drop us a ticket at support@hammerhead.io so we can analyze this further :)

I also noticed the following regarding altitude:

    Route Mö1 created on Komoot:
    Transfer route to Karoo:

The subsequent trip was 730 hm - exactly what Komoot had calculated.

Where does this difference come from?

    Greetings from sunny Germany

I believe the difference comes from the base map that Hammerhead use to calculate elevation on a given route. It seems wildly optimistic in terms of elevation gain. What's even more frustrating about this is that you will see another figure altogether when you click on your ride and view the ride stats at the bottom of the screen (in the Dashboard). I've previously written about this here. I do wish they would fix this issue as a matter of urgency it does not help the overall perception of quality when different parts of the Hammerhead dashboard is reporting different values for exactly the same ride data.

Furthermore, I would not necessarily take Komoot's elevation gain figures as being 100% correct. I've had some rides recently where the route I've planned in Komoot is several hundred metres less than the elevation gain recorded on the Karoo 2 which has then been corrected in Strava. I suspect Strava may be more correct since it uses a combination of factors (including crowdsourcing elevation data from other riders) to calculate the value.

Is 'crowdsourcing' going to be 'more accurate', or just 'whatever Garmin says' as most units out on the route?

Maybe read the Strava FAQ to find out:

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001294564-Elevation-on-Strava-FAQs

I'm just warning against assuming Komoot to be 100% correct. Because it's not. And neither is RwGPS.

The Strava FAQ on their base map is also quite interesting:

    https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000024864-Announcing-Strava-s-Elevation-Basemap

If you opt to correct your elevation after recording with a barometric altimeter, we will use the basemap.

I've had rides recently where the total elevation gain recorded by the Karoo 2 has been within a fraction of one percent of the Strava basemap elevation gain for my route (but also severeral hundred metres greater than the elevation gain planned in Komoot). Not only that, but I've gone to the trouble of checking various points of my ride with spot heights published on a British Ordnance Survey map and the Karoo 2 is rarely more than 1 or 2 metres out. Cumulative elevation gain is sometimes an issue when viewing in the Dashboard (as highlighted by previous posters in this thread) which, I believe, is more to do with an issue in the Hammerhead Dashboard base map.

I have a lot more confidence in the elevation gain of my Karoo 2 now, than I did a few months ago.

    Not that I'm misunderstood:
After the last updates, I think the altitude difference from the Karoo is really great and very accurate!

Which just surprises me that, as shown in my example, the driven Hm from the Karoo & the predicted Hm from Komoot are almost the same. If I load the tour into the dashboard to follow it, the difference is over 40%!

The route recorded with Karoo fits in with Komoot again ;-)

Yes, I'm not sure what's up with the Dashboard's elevation reporting other my earlier response where I suspect the Dashboard base map must be incorrect.

It's been like this for a long time now. It would be nice if this particular issue was fixed (along with inconsistent reporting of elevation data point between the ride summary screen (Home) and the ride detail screen (click on a ride).

I just got my new K2 today and imported several Routes from Strava.  What I see in my Hammerhead Dashboard is, that the Ascent is way higher in K2 as in Strava.

For example one trip with 140km which shows 1.302hm in Strava is shown as 2.640hm in my Hammerhead Dashboard.  I would not say Strava is 100% correct, but I know my Hood very well here and the 2.640m are way out.   How could this be?

I plan to go on this route tomorrow and see the outcome after recording.

Yes, it's a bit annoying that this happens. It would be helpful if somebody from HH could comment on this because there are a number of issues around how distance and elevation are reported in different screens of the Dashboard.

For example, I suspect you will see completely different values if you view the Rides summary page (containing just the distance and elevation gain figures) compared to clicking on the route and the values shown at the bottom of the screen, Patrick.

There's another post dedicated entirely to this specific issue:

    https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/community/posts/1260801743149-Dashboard-Inconsistent-elevation-reporting

I've already suggested that there may be some issue with how the total elevation gain is being calculated from the Dashboard basemaps but this is just speculation at this point.

@Benno. Ha, that would be a nice comparison. Let me know. The elevation of the glass went flawless, btw. :)
@Steve is right. There is too much difference in values at K2, Strava and RWGPS. But the most odd difference is in the Dashboard-Rides. The homescreen of the rides shows far different values than clicking on a ride and look at the panel at the bottom of the screen. Very strange.

Rode the tour today and the data collection regarding the total ascent went well. Pretty close to what Strava predicted before and what I estimated from my knowledge of the area. Sorry to say, but the calculation of the HH Dashboard is conplete scrap.
