Is the Karoo 2 display dependent on the backlight being on, or is it a reflective type that only needs a backlight in dark conditions

Good question. I presume after looking up trans-reflective this is about saving power. Lets hope it does save power but if it did, I'm sure they would have mentioned it.

The disadvantage of a trans-reflective screen (at least for the ones I used) is that such screens limit the amount of colors to be used. Making the screen look somewhat washed out.

The K2 is using a phone type display with vibrant colors and a high contrast.

Is the screen image shown in this thread https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/community/posts/1260801650909-Device-Impressions-Help  representative of what it looks like in bright sunlight with the screen brightness set to 100%?

No, that's not representative in my opinion. I never had to use the full brightness yet in bright sunlight.

With sunglasses I never had to set the slider above ~2/3 of it's reach to be able to easily see the screen.

    Hi Michael,

    Thank you for posting!

The Karoo 2 houses a back-lit LCD unit that displays the detail on screen. However, the introduction of the light mode in the previous update should show improvement in legibility on-screen under direct sunlight.

@Michael Buckler, taking a picture from the phone is definitely NOT comparable to human vision.

No Michael, that’s not representative at all. The photos below were taken with a matt screen protector although the second photo was my first bad attempt at applying it but have included because the day was much sunnier. Brightness set at 59%.
