My understanding is that the maximum heart rate is based on the maximum heart rate during the current ride, rather than some algorithm (typically 220 - age, in basic terms).

So, if you reach a max of 160 bpm during your ride then that will be taken as the value of your maximum heart rate and percentages will be calculated based on that value. If you subsequently increase your max HR to, say, 180 bpm during the same ride, then all the percentage values will be adjusted accordingly using 180 bpm as the max HR.

At least, that is the mental model I have on how it works, currently.

That can't be true. When I start a ride the displayed value is more or less in the right area, say 50% of max HR. If it would display the current percentage of the max HR during THIS ride it would be close to 100% at the start.

And besides, such an display would be completely useless from the training viewpoint ;-)

I must admit, this is not something I have explored very much on the Karoo and the online help is extremely vague on this subject. I have not found any help topics that describe how this works or is calculated.

What you say makes sense and it would effectively prevent the Karoo from being used a a training aid.

Hopefully somebody from Hammerhead will be along shortly to explain how it works...

Thank you, I found it! I was expecting it in the rider's profile settings, where I can set my height and weight.
I do not use training zones, so I just overlooked it there...
