Karoo 2 with SIM card, make and receive calls/SMS
Hello,
OK, so I think that it is smashing with the possibility to install a SIM card in the Karoo 2. And as the Karoo 2 is what I have read pretty much a small smart phone made into a bike computer it would be great if it could act as a smart phone. Only that I would need to connect bluetooth headset if making/receiving a call.
Would this be possible? Something that you would consider developing?
Would be great if I could leave my 200g iPhone at home! :) And still be able to make a phone call/send a text message if I need to make a distress call.
(I read that some Karoo 2 user had made a call to the SIM-card he/she had installed in the Karoo 2. Got a message of a missed call from the Karoo 2. Then called back and made a successful call via bluetooth headset. So, it sounds like above would be possible?)
Kind regards
Anders

Hi Anders, these are the steps for making phone calls with the Karoo 2:
- Insert Sim
- Sideload some dialing app as a front end for receiving and making phone calls. It's your choice, but I like Koler since it is open source, light weight and add-free. It is available on F-Droid.
- Connect headset or speaker with built-in microphone to your Karoo.
The weak point is that there is no audible warning for incoming calls, but it will show clearly on your Karoo display.
I haven't tried, but I guess texting SMS messages would work if you sideload an app for that.
Interestingly, I got my Galaxy Watch 3 to work for making calls by installing Galaxy Wearable on the Karoo and pairing my watch with it. Should work with many other watches as well. But if you use your watch for crash detection or emergency calls, it might be better to leave it connected with the phone in your back pocket, since the Karoo mounted in front of your handle bar is more vulnerable in case of a crash.
