Karoo 2 Map orientation
AnsweredWith my Karoo, I had the map screen aways having the my ride moving from the "bottom" to the "top" of the screen, meaning my current direction was alway pointing us so that when I came to a turn, it was very clear on the map if I go right or left. On the Karoo 2, the orientation seems to be "locked" pointing North. I have tried to unlock and click on the arrow, all that happens is the North/South compass in the upper right on the screen appears/disappears, but the orientation of the map does not change.
Is there a way to have the map always have my current route going from bottom to top, especially after turns?
Thanks

@ Chris: Thank you for sharing your experience. As per the recent change, the compass is "fixed" to the map and it does not rotate relative to the map. This change is made after an extensive test that proved to save the battery. That being said, we understand that this could slightly affect the usability that you are looking for and we have shared this feedback with the Product team.

But why change something that was clearly working as users expect? I was not aware of this until Chris pointed it out (I've had a K2 on order since August).
Are there any other detrimental changes in the K2 UI that I need to know about before completing my order sometime this month?

I have to agree with @Steve Woolley on this one. It's bad form to remove existing functionality especially without warning. I would much prefer you would notify the community that the functionality impacts battery life and let people choose if that's acceptable. Those that use the device for only an hour or two at a time would be happy with that trade off.
-
Hi all, I understand this could have been useful for other riders. But it was a decision taken to improve the battery life by a big margin on Karoo 1. This change was added in July 2019 and is not from recent times. We will surely put in a request with the team to consider an alternative model for riders who would be happy to trade off the battery life.
Everything else remains the same as on Karoo 1, except the button positioning on Karoo 2.

Hi All,
I wondering about that, because i have an Karoo 1 with the lates Update from 17.12.2020 and never was on this an issue with map orientation, allwasy works both ways.
I wait for my Karoo2 an I closed today the preorder, but if this will not work like K1 i will send back and buy a Wahoo.

@Ali, my last ride with my original Karoo functioned as I expected (i.e., the direction of the map was always in alignment with my bike and the compass moved) and I always kept it up to date.
So, this is not something that happened on my original Karoo - it is a change that only happened with the Karoo 2. Please make it a configurable choice as it really does make me have to think too much about which way to go :)
-
@Ali, yes please make it possible. Reducing the Features to save Batterie is not a good solution! Each smartphone comes with bigger battery and more functions.
I like also in the past, the Signal lights in the average speed, or the visual view of Gears by Di2 or etap!
Nice Display with less function can not be the best Bicycle Headunit what you will be!

Agreed. I'm just waiting for delivery of my Karoo 2. It looks like it'll be sent back.
Having the map always pointing in front of you is essential to navigating efficiently and safely. You shouldn't have to remember to rotate the map in your head so you know to go left or right.
Imagine being tired at the end of a hard ride and having to work out which way to go! If its a battery issue be upfront and tell us the difference in battery like with it on/off. Then give us the option to switch it on/off so we can choose

I'm also still yet to receive K2 and this topic concerns me a bit.
Tho I think there is some kind of misunderstanding here - The initial post impiles that map is locked to north and is NOT being rotated with respect to the direction of ride.
However looking here, it is pretty obvious that the map DOES ROTATE - Hammerhead Karoo 2 In-Depth Review
So what's the actual problem here then?
-
You are correct, the map does rotate, but the actual problem (as I see it) is that the map rotates to always point "North up".
What a lot of folks here are saying is that they would prefer the map to point "Route up" (i.e. have the line of the route always pointing towards the top of the Karoo screen such that it makes it easier to know in which direction to turn when approaching a road junction.
If I use Google Maps on my iPhone to navigate to a destination, as soon as I press Start, the map rotates to point "Route up" and I can see exactly in which direction I need to travel and in which direction my next turn is. On the Karoo, you have to go through the process of figuring out which direction you're heading and in which direction you need to turn (because the turn might be in the opposite direction to how it is displayed on the map). This has caught me out a few times, to be honest.
My mental model of how I would expect this to work is based on Google's implementation of it:
- Start a ride
- Make the map point point "route up" by default
- If the user wishes to change the orientation of the map to "North up" then tap on the compass icon
- If the user wishes to change back to "Route up" then tap on the compass icon again
The issue for me is that the compass icon on the Karoo screen appears to do absolutely nothing today. If it doesn't do anything, why is it even shown on the screen? I'm pretty sure the compass icon used to behave as described above but this functionality was removed last year sometime to preserve battery power. The compass icon remains (but for what purpose?).

@Martin Just watched it and it would appear that the map does rotate to point "Route up". I wonder if this is only available on the Karoo 2 (paid, still waiting for tracking guys) because I'm pretty sure my Karoo 1 only displays maps "North up".
My comments on the compass icon still stand; I'm not sure what this does on my Karoo 1. It seems I am able to toggle between two different views by tapping the compass and the location arrow but I have no concept of what each view is showing me.
I guess if I had my Karoo 2 I would be able to provide a more informed response to this question. On the face of it, it seems that this is a limitation that only affects the Karoo 1 and was introduced to improve battery life. Ray clearly demonstrates it pointing "Route up" so I would hope that's how the Karoo 2 works.
As you were...

Both my K1 and K2 are set to display ‘route up’. I always have the GPS set that way since I find it easier to navigate. In this way the compass pointer at the top right rotates, as does the map, keeping the route in an ‘up’ orientation.
It used to be the case that by touching the compass you could toggle the Karoo into a ‘north up’ operation. In that case the compass display is removed at the top right - it is no longer needed since the map is always north up. By touching the arrow icon on the left of the screen underneath the lock icon, you could turn ‘route up’ on again. This looks like it still might work, although I would need to ride to prove it. Certainly the compass disappears when it is touched and reappears after touching the arrow.
I hope that helps.

@Jeff Smith - can you tell me how to set my Karoo 2 to display 'route up'? I have tried everything I can think of and all my map page shows is the compass always pointing north and my map always pointing north.
It would be fantastic if I can get a way to have the map display in the route up orientation.
Thanks in advance!
Chris

You need to be moving to see the effect - I’m not sure if you are when you check? For example, my map does not change until I start moving and then the map orients as it should either to the direction of travel or to north up. I didn’t have a route to check with today when I was walking, but I am absolutely certain that the Karoo works ‘route-up’ when the compass is displayed.
If your problem persists, maybe a factory reset could solve the problem, but that should only be a last resort.
-
@Jeff Smith - thank you!!! Problem resolved! My maps are not oriented in the direction I am riding and I have the compass on the map screen that shows north/south relative to my ride. Here's the steps I took (your mileage may vary):
1) Factory reset Karoo 2
2) Loaded a route and started a ride, had Karoo 2 on Map Screen
3) Map was oriented North/South and displayed in North/South orientation
4) Pressed the compass button (while moving) - compass disappeared from screen - still oriented North/South
5) Pressed "arrow" under lock and screen orientation changed (immediately) to be direction I was riding!!!!! :)
6) Pressed area on screen where Compass is, Compass re-appeared and rotated relative to my ride - map orientation did not change and compass would rotate.
This is how I expected the Karoo 2 map to function and it does - I don't know if you need to go through these steps, but it's what worked for me and and I am very happy Karoo 2 user!!!
