Routes - cannot create - no internet connection

Hi, just received a new device an was very disappointed as the main function is not working. I‘ve tried to create a route on the device itself as per guide. Though the device is connected to wifi and offline maps are downloaded when I go the menu to create the route it shows that there is no internet connection. Is it a fault or there is a trick to solve this? As without it working properly the device is just useless. Thanks
