Feature request: configurable defaults for map view
It’s full-finger glove season again so interacting with the touchscreen is more difficult. Changing the map orientation to north-is-up is one of these things you can only do with the touch screen and some of us want to do this every time we ride.
When using a route, changing the orientation kind of comes automatically as a part of a larger interaction process, but when just starting from home, interacting with the computer is pretty low on my list of priorities. (Indeed I might not even remember to start the ride until after a minute or two of riding.) As a consequence, I’ll have to either remove a glove mid-ride or try my luck to see if the gloves I’m wearing that day might happen to be touchscreen-compatible (some are, some aren’t, but none I have are 100% reliably so).
So, how about simply adding configurable defaults for map orientation and zoom level while you’re at it? A separate configurable zoom level for the automap function would be useful as well, at least I have found that the area shown in the automap is often too small to see where I am actually supposed to be going when there are multiple turns involved. Nowadays there is even an obvious place in the UI where to put these, namely Data Field Design under Settings...

Agreed, I often find it tricky to hit those 2 buttons on the touchscreen, the map lock button and the north-is-up button. There should be a way to control them with the buttons only — but I suppose the B and D buttons are taken for zoom and pause, A and C switch the layouts, A and C together open the Control Centre.
So maybe map lock and north-is-up could be added to the Control Centre's Display or Ride pages for cold or rainy weather operation without the touchscreen.

I am already feeling lucky that it is possible to have the map "north up" now. I was literally waiting for years for this basic feature to be implemented to the point where I bought a Garmin just to have this (and other) functionality. It then took me quite a while to realize that they actually implemented it some day.
Nowadays I only ever use the karoo in winter, since that is where the Edge 1030 sucks (does not have buttons to operate). So having a saveable preference for Map orientation would be really important for me as well.

This is just an annual reminder of an earlier feature request about the same thing... Anyway, the specific details are there in the first post, orientation has just two options and zoom level has a number of steps (same as what you go through with long presses of the two top buttons in map mode) however you choose to describe them.
Yeah, much of the time I use the map mode basically just as an overly sophisticated compass to figure out which way the wind is blowing (a weather plugin would be nice), and occasionally also just for orientation (where am I relative to some known location where I sort of know the road/street network but not so perfectly that some strange or complex turn couldn’t surprise me), no route loaded in either case.
