Enable SDK for Karoo (3)
Dear Hammerhead,
Can you please enable the SDK for the new Karoo (3) like you did for 1 and 2 before?!
It’s extremely important for most of us who’re riding our bikes with other groupsets like your mother company provides…
Most of us made you big with purchasing version 1 and version 2 and it would be a very well appreciated move if you prioritise this point on your list.
Please always remember who supported you all the years - it’s us, your community!
Best regards
Andi

I have a total of three bikes. Two of them with SRAM gears and one of them with Shimano gears. Two years ago I switched from the Wahoo Roam to the Karoo 2. To be honest, I find it quite sad that the Hammerhead is not open to other manufacturers. It was not possible to use the Dura-Ace gear system from the factory. I have been able to live with the workaround of the SDK solution on the Karoo 2 for the past 2 years. Today my new Karoo 3 arrived and I was horrified to realise that I can't install the SDK on it. This means that my new bike computer cannot be used everywhere.
I'm not going to buy a bike computer for 500 EUR that I can't use on all my bikes.
If Hammerhead don't offer me the option, I will have to make use of my right of cancellation. -
@Marco Nipkow I'm just as upset about the SDK thing as you but I need to set things a bit straight about Karoo and Shimano support.
Karoo did originally support Shimano. When HH got purchased by SRAM, Shimano revoked their license to use the Di2 SDK (It's not a standard ANT implementation) and therefore Shimano locked the Karoo out of being able to interface with Di2.

I am disappointed that the new unit has less features than the old one. One would have thought that we would be moving forwards not backwards. This is the sort of stuff Garmin would do and the reason i bought the Karoo, Karoo 2 and now the new one. So get this sorted ASAP….non questions

I am in support of enabling the SDK. I just received the Karoo (3rd generation) and it is a wonderful and snappy device. If this isn’t going to be enabled, I plan on returning the device and sticking with my Karoo 2 and buying the garmin 1040 for longer rides that my Karoo 2 can not survive…

I'm thinking about buying the new Karoo 3 but this aspect here is seriously stopping me. Now I'm even thinking about waiting for the next generation of Garmin, because OF COURSE you can connect those to Di2... how ridiculous is it not to release the SDK for the new hardware release and thus effectively exclude all Ki2/Di2 users??
-
@Tim: That’s correct, but therefore Hammerhead has opened its system with the SDK to make things happen.
Now it seems like Hammerhead is playing hardball, because those DI2 management didn’t acknowledged the well meant attempt to find a solution.
That’s a criy-baby attitude, if it would turn out this way.And who is currently the loisers?
It is us the end-users now. This reminds me of Philipps and the Hue lightning system… they quit the open protocol with an update and all third party products have been bannied/locked out!
That lead to a massive shtstorm and damaiged the company’s reputation and sales figures… and finally they returned to the open protocols again…Seems that this has the potential to cause the same here… (and I hope not!)
PS: Needed to include some typos… i

Another +1 for SDK support, both my bikes are DI2 and the whole situation with this is ridiculous. It is us the customers that lose out here!
Unfortunately with the price increase, lack of SDK ie DI2 support and some of the features that are now offered by Garmin I would likely be tempted back. I also find it hard to believe that items such as live tracking and companion app support cannot be made available for the K2.
I bought into the Hammerhead concept and hope this isn't the shape of things to come now they are owned by SRAM.

Dear Hammerhead/SRAM,
I think you already understood the importance of the SDK for quite a lot of us.
1 week passed by, over 50 votes (probably the most ever) and no response from you guys yet…Seriously, it’s a major safety concern by using Karoo now…sprinting in a bunch of riders, descending with >50mph… any thoughts what can happen by leavening the hoods to switch the screen??
Can you please provide us with any information on this topic?
Many thanks in advance.

@Andi Djee, I completely agree with you. While Franklin and the support team promptly responded to the ticket I submitted about Di2 support, it seemed like a standard response crafted by the communications department. It's an answer, but not a solution, and certainly not a roadmap to one.
The start-up/scale-up mentality and community engagement they had before becoming part of SRAM is now missing.
I think it's a great device but lacks a critical function. It's like buying a premium car that drives great but doesn't use turn signals. And the company doesn't respond to the needs of its customers.
Hammerhead prompted me to write a review, and I gave it two stars. It seems like they need to be pressured into resolving this critical issue. As an early adopter of the Karoo 1 and 2, I am saddened to give a negative review. I'm even considering returning the new Karoo and instead checking out what the new Coros or the anticipated Edge 1050 will offer. If they added Di2/Ki2 support, I would not even consider those devices. Community, please review accordingly when prompted. Hopefully, putting pressure on Hammerhead/SRAM will push them to fix this.
-
@Niels Dijkstra - I have to agree on looking at other devices. I love the Hammerhead 2 week release cycle philosophy and the device but the silence from support is deafening. I've found myself researching the Edge 1050 over the last few days and will probably buy it if there's no messaging on this by the time it comes out.
-
Coros are bringing out a cycling computer 24th June (Coros Dura) might be an alternative (I'm not currently sure about sideloading or DI2 compatibility) but they surely can't treat customers with the silence that's been experience here. All we want to know is will SDK be released and approximately when

Damienjoseph: "All we want to know is will SDK be released and approximately when"
I think this is a simple request and should be responded to by Hammerhead/SRAM immediately. Silence by Hammerhead/SRAM on this issue will not win over new or current users of the Karoo. Ki2 is vital to Shimano Di2 users since Shimano & Hammerhead/SRAM will likely never come to an agreement to allow Hammerhead/SRAM to reimplement Di2 functionality into the Karoo. We all hope to hear from Hammerhead/SRAM very soon.

Dear SRAM/Karoo/Hammerhead team.
I have type 1 diabetes and the #1 reason why I got the Karoo is that there is a GitHub sideloading tool that allows us with diabetes to add important blood sugar related data from our continuous glucose monitors to various screens on the Karoo.
I am told by the developper, that without the SDK enabled, that communication method is not possible.
Please ENABLE SDK in your next update. Thank you
