GPS Fix is slow on K3 compare to K2

Is it caching your last location? I find every time I turn mine off - it resets to the stock location and cold boots the gps, that's probably why it's so slow.

It is caching something, but obviously no movement is detected (auto pause). The "last location" shown on screen is about 15km away from me. It was the exact same location the last 3 times I checked.

Today it took about 80 seconds to get a GPS fix, which is way too long.

I don't think it is pulling in emphemris data properly.
The sony gps chip isn't quick unless it has that data.
In theory if the hammerhead has been connected to wifi in the last 24hours then the data should be updated.

I've just sideloaded gps test to check.
    https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.android.gpstest.osmdroid/

Clearing assist data in that causes a very long gps lock time (with wifi off)
Turn wifi on, inject ptsd and inject time data - disable and then re-enable status - this appears to warm boot the gps and it's quicker.

A cold boot (ie turn the karoo 3 off and on again) and start gps test - rather than a ride, first fix is 53 seconds. Better than 80, but still not good.

I have the same problem, I tested (side by side) K2 and K3, K2 always catches the fix much faster.

I noticed that the speed is displayed much quicker when resuming an activity after boot up (10seconds vs > 60seconds when starting a new activity after boot up)

I'm not sure if the hammerhead software team actually check this forum..
If they published GPL2 compliant kernel source (as per the licence requirements for using the linux kernel, as they are using android) then we could probably fix this - and some of the other issues, that are kernel related.

We will be publishing the "GPL Compliance - Linux Kernel Patch" for the Karoo in about a week. I will follup up here once it is live.

    Thanks for your patience.

Is this published already? I don't think so because I still have the problem.

No sign of the gpl compliant source code - nor a fix for this, nor a fix for audio cues not working over bluetooth.. All of which have been promised but not delivered.

Lots of fixes for things that really are minor issues, but none to fix the big launch bugs.

I have the same issue. Getting a GPS signal from a cold boot takes 1 to 2 minutes. Much slower than my previous Karoo 2.

I do notice 2 differents kinds of behaviour when there's no GPS connection. Sometimes there's a blank map screen with no map present. Other times I'm located at the last location where I lost GPS signal, i.e. some under water crossing I passed by a few weeks ago.

It is not ideal that the K3 is slower in that regard than the K2 and I hope the situation can be improved.

However, to put in into context: The Wahoo Bolt v2 that I also have takes WAY longer to find a GPS fix.

I am losing my mind, I don't get a GPS connection at all. Blank display, whether using the K3 on its own or when paired to the companion app on my phone in my back pocket. I have updated all new software releases, have double checked settings etc.

Might this be a defective unit or am I doing something very wrong.

    @lee

I had the same problem a few days ago and so did a lot of other people here in the forum.

    No response from Hammerhead.

Regarding my post, https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/community/posts/26646340219547/comments/28194751715867 and at the risk of embarrassing myself by my cluelessness, I seem to have fixed my problem. Looking at the support material once again, I realised that my K3 did not have an 'Outdoor ride' profile set up. The profile in position 1, which I had been using, was called 'Default profile' or something similar. It didn't seem to have the mapping / GPS screen included. Perhaps I deleted it inadvertently, I dunno. But it wasn't there and GPS wasn't working and I was riding all the time on autopause. :(

So, I set up a new profile and included everything I would have expected to have come set up out of the box and now things seem to be working as expected.

For anyone from Hammerhead reading, I may have made some rookie mistakes setting up, maybe something was glitchy with my software, I dunno. But after almost 20 years using Garmin, I would have thought I would 'get it' when setting up my K3 for the first time but apparently not.

Glad it was an easy fix, Diarmuid.

We are looking into the other issues with the GPS, on Karoo and its being investigated right now.

I have the same issue in getting a GPS fix on my Karoo (3). That's perhaps not even the worst part of it though. I did a nice ride on an old rail road track that has been converted into an excellent bike path. It includes a number of tunnels and obviously you loose the GPS signal. However, the Karoo did not seem to count the distance that has been traveled without a GPS signal. So, that is tunnel length + GSP fix length. I am guessing that I am missing about 8-10km on that ride.

I fully understand that Karoo cannot get any measurements while riding in tunnels. But I do expect Karoo to add the length of the tunnel to my ride. This seems to me to be a bug. Am I the only one that has noticed this?

I ride with a Karoo2 and for my feelings the GPS Fix became slower after one of the last updates. No big deal for me, but right no it takes some corners after the start, til the Karoo finds a GPS signal and shows me the correct direction. It was for sure faster in the past.

I just ordered a new Karoo, so will be interesting to check how much slower the new unit will be.

I also use a Bolt 2 and this unit's GPS Fix is very slow, too.
