Second Map screen
PlannedHi, its been 4 monthts now, several updates. Any news on the possibility to get more then just one mapscreen per profile, each with different data?
It would be great, to get a second editable mapscreen in one profile. So i can put 4 datascreens on one mapscreen, and on a second mapscreen maybe only 2 datascreens for example or the full map.
Now i can just have 1 Mapscreen with or without datascreens per profile and its not ideal.

Forget it man. Hammerhead is not able to program a simple second mapscreen with different datasets. A simple copy-paste would suffice. Its been 2 years now they rather spent time screwing up the old magnificent clear layout with an abundance of greyish blue colours then getting their software on par with the competition.

I am also looking forward to this feature! Based on the time it takes, I'm assuming it's a bit more than just "copy & paste". I could imagine the map is still rendered in the background while switching to other (data) screens. Therefore having multiple map screens open might potentially be draining the battery more or lower the performance.
But again, I am not part of the developer team so who I am to judge? Anyway, couple more upvotes on this feature from me :-)

Wow! I thought it was just me... I couldn’t find a way to make more then 1 map screen. It just did not occur to me it would nit be possible. But now I know that it is not I cannot believe it. This and the major flaw of way too much elevation meters in te routes makes me wonder if I will keep my just bought Karoo. Especially since these problems are there for quite som time already.
Apart from this, I think it is the best Bike computer there is, after having owned all the other major suspects.
But still in doubt.
Other users: What is your experience in general about updates/fixed etc? Are they addressed quite fast?

@hammerhead it has been 3 months since an update on this, within this thread, and then last informative update was 5 months ago. we understand that there are battery drain and crash issues but wondering how the work around is coming along since... please!!!
This is an important issue for many of us!!!

I am a bit thrown off by the comment
1. High battery drain due to two maps running on the navigation
... um, what? Why would there be two maps running, if one is on another page? Are you saying that you are updating datafields (and the map) regardless of whether they are being currently shown of not?
-
This is indeed one that is hard to understand, unless there is some very major underlying architectural mistake with a hard-code to one map screen. Or, like someone suggested, that each screen is updating even when not visible, which would drain battery.
I will say that a workaround that I have used is to long press the lower right button to go to the home screen and change the profile while riding. Cumbersome, but accomplishes the goal.

Oh boy two years in and it's still not there.
I'd like to add my own use case, taken from riding a few years with a Sigma ROX 12.0. Not one of the big brands but still a very respectable full-function GPS device. I used to have a map with four data fields as my go-to display: speed+HR+Cadans+Distance. However, when navigating a route (and only then) the Sigma offers a second map with two datafields, only relevant for that scenario: Time to arrival and Distance to target. I would very much love to have that on my K2.
Other than that, map is just another datafield type you can put on any screen.
But it's a give-and-take when comparing devices. The Sigma eg. does not have the graphs. And the same will probably be true for Garmin, Wahoo and others.

Bumping this as being able to have a second map screen would be a HUGE benefit, allowing me to have a screen with small map and plenty of data fields, whilst riding, and then when needing to use the touchscreen to actually navigate/find somewhere etc i have the whole screen real estate to play with.
FYI - creating a second ride profile as a full screen map only is a poor work around I'm doing.
Please get this up the backlog.

I think I've stumbled upon the reason this still isn't implemented (as well as the reason there is never any lag when switching pages).
Looking at the XML of UI elements of a single page in the Ride app, I get every single element for every single page in the profile, with most simply hidden offscreen. So switching pages is actually just them changing width and position of parts of the existing, one view, rather than pushing a completely new view.
Now, why they can't track which elements are offscreen and keep them from updating to avoid the presumed battery drain issues of multiple maps and lots of single-width graphical fields, I have no clue.
But I'm guessing a bit of rearchitecture to allow for just that is what's holding things up as it stands. -
I agree with so many others here; a second map profile screen is essential. Sometimes you need to use all that lovely screen real estate to navigate (trails particularly!), but mostly one needs visual nudges while also tracking other training data. Choosing to only have one of those options means having decide which one you may need for the day; hardcore navigation day in a new area or light navigation with data; users shouldn't have to choose between these. Please make this happen.

I like a lot of things about the Karoo 2 but this is another omission of basic functionality that just blows my mind. As others have said - I want one full-screen map for the "where the heck am I" moments and one or more others with data fields above/below.
Giving this another bump because it's two months since the last post and a lot longer since any actual statement/news...

No worries, Jan. I have only had the Karoo 2 for 4 weeks and I was led to believe that it was way better than any other bike computer on the market. In my opinion it isn't! I have some technical issues with the unit which I have raised 2 tickets with the Hammerhead team, and have got nowhere so far. I am happy to hear that you are happy with your Karoo 2!

Got my Karoo 2 today, tried to configure a second map card, googled it and ended here.
I'm intrigued as to why they can't do this, but I can think of a few possible reasons.
Firstly I assume that the mapping and routing software is licenced, probably from google. That might limit things. It may not be possible to have a single instance of a map object running, which allows it to render into screens of different size. Instead when you create the object you tell it how big a hole on the screen it is going to fill, and the map class will initialise itself. So that means two objects have to run if you have two cards. More memory. Bad.
Secondly, Joen above pointed out that all the fields you can potentially see on any screen are all updated in real time, even if they aren't displayed on the screen at that particular moment. This could be because recalculating some information when you switch screen is probably a lengthy process. To calculate the altitude gain for example you'd have to trace through your ride since the display was last shown. Potentially this could slow down the refresh when you switch screens, which Hammerhead might not want. Or they might not want to store all your route data. Or both. Either way the delay in time to update a map instance could be significant and change the user's experience of the device so that it appeared disappointingly slow for such an expensive piece of hardware.
Anyway, having multiple map instances in the background - each of which would have to be updated with your position in real time, and update the map based upon your new position - could easily drain significant power, and consume large chunks of the system memory. I'm not familiar with Garmin's (or competitor of your choice's) devices, but would be interested to know if they had solved this. I am familiar with the cyclemeter app on iOS, and they haven't solved this. You can add multiple map screens there but they are all the same size (and with no other data on it).
I'm not 100% sure what the underlying issue is, but as it has been a couple of years and they haven't found a good way of implementing it yet I'm not holding my breathe. You can bet this is a lot more than a copy/paste, as someone said it was.
I'll think about this on my next ride. Interesting problem.

Gotta say really turned off by this and all the positive reviews on the Karoo 2 device.
I feel like it was a lie.
I read all the reviews, and they all gush about the Karoo 2 and the amazing map directions and touch screen, and OMG, the climb screen is sooo awesome.
Then it arrived, and the first thing I tried to do was make multiple map screen layouts with different data layouts, only one map at a time but with different layouts.
I came here to read it's been 3 years with no advancement on this.
The reviews rave about the awesome updates always adjusting to users. 3 years and it still says planned.
No reviewer ever wanted more than one map layout and couldn't comment on this???
COMMON DC RAINMAKER!!!
Had I read the comments and seen how many wishlists were there forever, each of them ones that are obvious and I want to, I'd have held off.
Garmin must totally totally suck if this is better.
But Garmin has multiple map layouts. How do they pull it off? Figure it out.
Another is the request to customize the climb screen.
I'd like the option to have a climb screen but not have it pop open like turn by turn.
I'd like a bike odometer option in distance/bike.
I shouldn't have to on a bike computer navigate 10 menus to get the bike's odometer.

Feature request - explore rewrite of profile code
- Support one running instance of each data/graph sensor type and only one running map
- Turn each into rearrangeable widgets that work much as they do now
- Allow the map widget (only one running) to rearrange with these other data/graph widgets on user-defined screens
- The running widgets rearrange on the fly as a new screen is called up
There should be no need to run multiple instances of speed, or cadence or map
You just need the ability to rearrange them on the fly
If you can rearrange these "widgets" on the fly as screen layouts are selected, you'd actually save battery if you're currently running more than one instance of anything.
This would solve the request for many map screens with different data layouts and also allow more freedom of layout screens and be more efficient.
