    Hi Todd,

It is possible to get the measurement of Calories on the Karoo. On the Karoo, the two fields “Calories” and “Calorie Burn Rate” is calculated from the Power data. Our calculations are based on Training Peaks and we believe measuring these values from Power (watts) is more accurate than deriving them from Heart Rate (beats per minute).

You will be able to add the Data fields for “Calories” and “Calorie Burn Rate”.

For complete details, please go through this link: https://support.hammerhead.io/hc/en-us/articles/360008478974-Data-Fields

I am confused.  The link that you sent indicates that it must be connected to a power meter to obtain calories from the Karoo?

While I understand it would use different methods of calculation when using a power meter, calories based on HR and other known factors are an industry norm.

Every cycling computer I have owned in the last 10 yrs provides calories without a power meter.  Does the Karoo not provide calorie data on its own?

    Thanks,

    Todd

    Hi everyone,

Currently, a power meter is required to get the calorie details. Our calculations are based on Training Peaks and we believe measuring these values from Power (watts) is more accurate than deriving them from Heart Rate (beats per minute). At the same time, I am considering your message as feedback and forwarded this to the software team. They will be happy to discuss this.

Has this been resolved? I don't want to buy a power meter just so I can have calories used. I thought the Karoo was supposed to be the best cycling computer.

I have the same point, don't believe the calories consumed is being accurately reflected based on current method. Using a powermeter would be an overkill. Has there been any movement on this topic?

    Hey Kewal,

As of now, our calculations are based on Training Peaks and calories are calculated based on the Power. We do not have immediate plans to change the calculation but I will definitely bring this up in the Product meeting.

Well Hammerhead need to change this.

A $400 cycling computer that cannot calculate calories is a Major flaw.  Every fitness monitor I have had over the past 10 years shows calories.

Spending another $600+ for a power meter is clearly overkill and unnessesary as everyone else can do without.

    FIX YOUR COMPUTER!

I concur, I come from Garmin , my colleagues use Wahoo . There has always been a difference between Garmin and Wahoo but Karoo widens that gap even more & shows calories mostly at lower side.
This should be addressed, it's an important metric.

I am echoing Mr Todd Hunter and adding that I bought two of these. That would entail a whole lot of monies. I was forced to wear my Garmin watch while actually utilising this Karoo. My wife the same. Kangaroo MUST provide us what we are asking for simply because of poor advertising practices. Never did we ever expect to be purchasing 400$ chainring power meters. Are you kidding me? It's not in our plans? Seriously?

We can destroy your reputation with mere conversation in hundreds of portals solely on merely telling people your stupid plans to not servicing an obviously unhappy set of clients. That is not what I want. I want this product to work because I sank a bloody car worth of monies into this obviously good product. I suggest your company rethink quickly and provide us a HR version of a power meter please. Then watch sales climb.

I have seen good products fall short. This is a good product. I do not want to spend another 800$

I have been This product for over 4 months was satisfied about it.

i do still have my own Garmin 1030 which is working fine unfortunately I have to go back to Garmin which they listen to their customer.

karoo was working fine when I bought it at first calories speed ect.

i wanna bring something to your attention people the Karoo is not registering your new records. This feature I believe has been removed as well.

today I had 51km MTB with my Garmin and hammerhead my Garmin shows I’ve got 16 performance ( 16 time faster) but hammerhead didn’t shows this at all.

my Garmin shows I’ve burned 2200 calories but hammerhead shows 600 calories.

unfortunately the company is not listening to their customer which is the bad ever can a company do.

i am going to write article about the Karoo in mijn blog and let’s people knows about this.

a Garmin 1030 cost 390€ which included heart band and software which works with calories and speed performance. Hammerhead cost 400€ and if you want the calories you have to buy a watt meter to get his accurate which will be 1000€ and who knows what will happens in the future

I own a Karoo2 and this unit doesn't count kcal by HR either. As the rest of users I wonder if it will has being implement by software or if I will have to regret it and use another brand. Its a pity that your obstination will make you lost a lot of customers

As of now, we are looking for a computer for a friend and I am not recommending Karoo.  Its not even on the extended list.

Cycling is part of my overall fitness routine.  Tracking calories during workouts in an important part of that.

Besides that, calories on my Polar gave me a real bead on the measure of exertion and fitness during a ride.

Whenever I read reviews of the Karoo or Karoo2 they always seem to leave the fact that this critical metric is not supported by Hammerhead.

I always make it a point to bring this to their attention in the comments.

Hi All, We are sorry to let you down as we are yet to make this happen to get Calories from Heart rate. We will make sure that this feedback from the community will be shared with the Product team and let them know how badly the users need it. I am sorry that we don't have a concrete timeline to share with you as of now.

Just did my first ride with Karoo 2. I Ecco the comments here. A cycling computer is useless without being able to calculate the calories better. Wore my polar watch and hr monitor and burned 2650 calories on a ride where I cycled 55km and climbed over a 1000 meters during 3 hours. Karoo said I burned 1200. Get your act together. At least I can return it under the 45 day trial

I support this request strongly! calorie count is the essential measure for training and especially nutrition and weight control. I cannot afford a powermeter on each of my four bikes.

    Please make it happen!!!

Come on @hammerhead.io. its pretty fundamental to not have calorie count via HR and more concerning that its not beung implemented considering the weight of requests for it.

This really is a damn shame. Just received my Karoo 2 today and logged my first ride, only to realize that I can't see my calories burned. Seriously a MAJOR issue. Then I find this forum and realized that this issue hasn't been rectified in over a year SMH. Part of my reason for getting this device was how "dedicated" this team is to community feedback. At this point, I can either return it or spend extra money to get a Garmin HRM pro and look at my calories burned in garmin connect. This is a serious issue that could be easily fixed if you guys really cared. I'll decide within the next week if I'll get the edge 1030 plus or not.

Well, I have updated my Karoo 2 with the last software version and I´m very upset because there is nothing abut calories throw heart rate way.  The developers have said that tey would take in count aours suggestions but that´s a lie. I have seen a lot of messages about it, even saying some of us wil change to G+++IN if they don´t aply it.

I´m thinking that the only that developerss want to read is that the screen and the desing are greats, but nothing about OURS NEEDS, or must we buy an expensive powermeter for each of our bikes??

I don´t know what are they playing, but it is very probable that I will change my Karoo2 for any other which give me what I need and not what they want.

    Dear Juan,
i also like to have calorie count, but I have to admit, there is a lot of more important things in this world than OUR NEED for a calorie count. The guys at Hammerhead did a wonderful job compete fabulous against some big players and they respect a lot of user requirements. Developing something requires to follow a strategy not fulfilling single needs.
You are a little too upset, go buy a Garmin and ask them for a better Display.
    Best, Jan.

    Hi Jan,
I am not sure how much discount you expect for your answer.
But let get straight to the cause calorie are very important if not for you doesn’t mean they are not important to others.
We are talking here about hammerhead and not Garmin. If you are upset about Garmin display let me tell you there are more important things in this world than Garmin display.

Tbh without listening to the user, they won't continue to exist in the long term. Yeah we can rave about the display BUT its core functionality and usability that'll keep user and get the existing user to rave about it as a usable product.
For what it's worth, they are clearly listening as this release allowed use to mix imperial/metric which plenty had been asking for. I am surprised the calories update wasn't prioritise d as this is definitely a major missing bit of functionality for many users and something that's been raised by many since K1.
I don't know if it's a lack of understanding of how to do it,, stubbornness or just being slow to bring in real user stories BUT its a big miss and surprising it's not a priortised update

Jan, I apreciate your response, really. But if I would wanted a G***N I would bought it. If I would desired only a great screen I would bougth a cell phone with an amoled screen. But I chose  Hamerhead because I think they have a very competitive product and most important, it seemed to me that they listen their customers.

If the Hammerhead staff don´t  priorice a feature which is in several entries of the forum, I can´t think they were listening us. In my opinion is something important and basics, because of this my dissapointment whit their actitude.

I dont want to have reason, I only want to have HR calories in my expensive and supercool Karoo2.

Another thing important is that, as buyers, we must be together to get the best product possible, which will make us happier and HH richer.

    Greetings to all, Juan

    Hi all,

completely agree with you Juan, I consider basic the calories counter based in HR, in fact, any fitness band of Decathlon of 15€ has it. I sincerely hope that the development department take this in mind. The Karoo 2 is a super cycle computer and have to have it.

    Regards.

Karoo Sucks, I returned it and got a Wahoo F.

Just got a Karoo 2, and will return it if the Live Track feature isn't fixed to work via bluetooth and the companion app & it can't track calories via heart rate.  Both Garmin and Wahoo offer these basic features.

Here's the formula that Wahoo uses, but isn't proprietary to Wahoo, for your software engineers...one of them can whip this out in an afternoon...come on, get this done in less than 45 days or this is going back and my Wahoo Bolt will return to my bike instead.

While power is generally the best measure of calorie expenditure, during activity a strong relationship remains between heart rate and calories burned. The ELEMNT GPS Bike Computer series (including the ELEMNT, ELEMNT BOLT, and ELEMNT ROAM) and Wahoo Fitness app leverage this relationship to calculate the calories burned when a heart rate sensor is connected when no power source is available. The calories burned calculation uses the following equations from a study by Keytel et al. (2005)* as cited below:

This equation is evaluated once per second. The results are converted to kilojoules per second, then accumulated to calculate total calories burned.
