Custom Workouts
AnsweredHi,
I'm not a Trainingpeaks Premium user and therefore I can't use the Workouts functionality.
Would it be possible to allow custom workouts to be uploaded to the Dashboard?
It would make the most sense to use the .zwo XML format, as there are freely available workout generators for these online (along with existing workouts for just about anything on https://whatsonzwift.com/workouts/)
Without some method of allowing workouts to be loaded to the device, it's going to be a pretty limited uptake due to the TrainingPeaks requirement.
Thanks,
Stuart

@Clemente arias
I have just come to the end of my free TP premium trial yesterday. From a 5 minute play round it looks like the free account functionality is different on the TP app (iOS) vs desktop browser.
On the app i do not seem to be able to add an existing workout (i created a bunch during my premium trial) to the TP calendar, you seem to have to build it fresh (clearly not ideal). I can't even see my existing workouts on the TP app.
On the browser (windows / chrome) i seem to be able to drag and drop from my workout library as before and that workout has synched with my garmin connect calendar, so i assume (!) it would synch with Karoo dashboard.
I need to be able to do stuff on the fly, so this is annoying, although using chrome browser on the phone might work.
What i don't know is whether the K2 shows previous workouts in a historic calendar. If that's the case, that could help. Although this is all hassle compared with just having a folder with workouts in - which is basically what i'm waiting for.
it looks to me like, if you are going to rely on free TP, then planning is required to make sure you do what you can during those 2 weeks.
Hope this helps

I dropped the CS team a line and was told a similar story to before - it's on the radar of the development team but there's no immediate timescale. They did mention that a workout builder would likely be a part of a broader dashboard improvement. I actually don't need a workout builder myself, just the ability to synch created workouts to a folder, like routes.

Yeah, there are plenty of very capable and good workout builders (and workout data formats for interoperability) out there. There's no need for them to reinvent the wheel here, a simple upload of erg/zwo/whatever files would be fine. They already have the adapter to TrainingPeaks, it's just a matter of porting that functionality to the dashboard for a manual upload.
An all singing, all dancing builder, calendar and planner would be great, but we don't need that immediately, there are plenty of options already for that.

Just another to chime in that I want to be able to create a custom workout without having to join TP. I use Zwift and Trainer Road. I have been bragging about my Karoo 2 to my riding partner and was embarrassed last ride when he created a workout and put it on his Wahoo and I couldn't. Please make this available. We all want this.

I find it sad that even after all this time such a simple function is still not available on this device. Much cheaper devices enable being able to simply upload a custom training workout file as well as allow syncing to ALL of the main training apps (both download workouts from your calendar and upload completed rides) not just training peaks one way or another.
TBH I'm out, my Hammerhead Karroo's battery dies after 30-40 minutes even with the screen on 0% now, totally useless, so I'm not convinced I'll be getting a replacement or bother getting it repaired or upgrade to the version 2. Its too expensive for a device missing this key aspect of requirements.
Currently using a Stages Dash instead and it does everything I need. It pairs to Todays Plan as well directly so problem solved IMO. Battery also lasts a very very long time.
It's a bit of a shame, as the Karoo is nice to train with doing long rides in the winter with the nice big screen, especially the map being clear and moving so fluidly, (going down a mountain descent you do not know for example was an absolute pleasure). Might be convinced to come back to it if they sort out the training aspect in some future revision, but I guess we are in the minority of users here.

The very basic soultion would be to be able to plug the unit into a laptop and see the folders like an external drive, then copy / paste the file into the appropriate folder. Garmins have a "new files" folder where you can paste workouts, routes etc. i don't think this option is available and it seems a pretty easy way to offer workouts in some way.
I'm looking for a bigger screen head unit for easier navigation but i need this, so that points me towards the garmin 1030 plus.

Hi Folks,
I contacted CS again and got a quick reply, but no solution is imminent...
"Expanded workout functionality is still planned as part of the larger Dashboard project, but we do not have a timeline yet. I'm sorry that I am unable to provide additional information at this time. It will likely be after the first of the year before we receive details or an ETA on that."

As I see it, there's a multi-year promo deal with TrainingPreaks and it looks like it's not going to end soon and that's the real reason this feature is not implemented yet and not even on a short list.
Hammerhead already has the functionality for workouts, they just parse it in TrainingPeaks format from TP site. Adding adapter for some other file format is a couple hours of programming (I'm a developer too). Same goes for uploading workouts from files - users don't need a fancy workout builder that much. A very simple solution with uploading *.zwo, *.erg or whatever format would be enough, like you can do now with routes by just uploading *.fit, *.gxp, etc. file.
Not really blaming Hammerhead here. I bought Karoo 2 for outdoors use and navigation and see workouts as a very useful but complimentary feature, it would still be nice to have it implemented non the less. I really like Karoo 2.

I have tried the new functionality and it is NICE! Great job HH!
I have a suggestion for future expansion - either on the dashboard or the device - a folder structure and a scheduler could be added. That way I could have a folder of VO2Max workouts stored (or 1 hour, 2 hour, 3 hour ugh workouts) and drag them up to "active" and/or add a date to do them which would make them accessible on K2.
Anyway just my take on where this could go next. I am really happy about the update to training and the other core functionalities.

Hi everyone,
If you are trying to upload the Ride FIT file as a Workout. This won't work and it should be a workout file that should meet the below conditions:
-
Only support importing Workout file types (ex. no Activity files)
-
Must be one of the sport types:
-
Generic
-
Cycling
-
EBicycle
-
All
-
Invalid
-
-
The step must have one of the duration types:
-
Repeat until steps complete (only repeating type supported)
-
Time/TimeOnly (seconds)
-
Distance (with the same caveat as Training peaks)
-
Open (if it includes a target)
- If open doesn’t include a target, it will be ignored
-
Step must have one of the targets:
-
-
Speed (absolute)
-
Heart rate (absolute or %)
-
Cadence (absolute)
-
Power (absolute or %)
-
- Zone targets (Power and HR) are not supported

@Hari , thank you! I already tried it out couple of times and the ability of uploading *.zwo|fit is exactly the flexibility I was looking for, given how many ZWO-workout builders on internet or even how easy to write your own (it's just an XML file and format is google-able). Awesome job!
As a small feature request can you add additional workout card layout that will also contain "current heart rate"? Right now there's only one non-customizable layout have:
- power
- cadence
- segment time | power control
- workout graph/timeline (don't know how to call it)
Having HR is quite valuable, without jumping between layouts. Maybe there's a way to divide cadence field into 2 fields (cadence and HR).
Still, thank you!

So over 2 years user are asking for a solution to create workouts, without paying for another tool, like TP, I myself think that this should have a higher priority then having heat maps from others.. bottom line is there is function on my Karoo where I need a paying account to another company, this is not allowed by law in the EU !
-
My reading is that most folks were asking for the ability to import workouts, primarily. A builder would have been a bonus. I believe that there are plenty of free workout builder tools out there. I have a TP free account and those workouts can be exported into the the file types listed, so that's just one example. So i don't believe that your statement about "...need to pay another company..." is accurate.
Apologies if i misunderstood you.

@Ron Herwijnen, you don't need any paid service to create custom workout and upload it to your Karoo. Karoo accepts popular *.zwo workout format that you can create yourself in any free ZWO-format workout builder. Just google "zwo workout builder" and you'll find several links to free ones.
Don't know if it's allowed to post links here, but these are free ones I use (they're not commercial, I just found them on Google) :
Build your workouts there -> Press "Download" to download them in ZWO-format (*.zwo file) -> Upload ZWO-workout in your Hammerhead Dashboard in Workouts section and it'll appear on your device.
Also, I repeat my gratitude to developers of Karoo for providing this functionality. Thank you.

Another excellent alternative (free) is to create workouts with intervals.icu (only web based) Pretty simple tool to analyze data and build workouts that can be exported in .SWO or .FIT format. I grouped workouts in intervals.icu in folders (something HH does not have) and export the entire folder in a zip file. Then I decompress all workouts and then I drop them onto HH

Is there a differnece in the workout experience comparing the same workout as a drag & drop into the dashboard vs an app calendar synch (eg Training Peaks)?
It sounds like a daft question, but for the wahoo element, the app synch version has a nicer interface than uploading the file into the unit - even though it should be the same file.
Thanks

^^ It looks like the drag & drop dashboard import uses absolute power targets, whearas the TP calendar synch file uses % of FTP, which is how i author the workout. In which case i'll continue to use the calendar synch process so the workout targets are aligned with my current FTP. A bit of a shame, but no huge deal. Is this what other people experience?
