How can I update the maps in Karoo more often?

I completely understand your point here. Right now, it is not possible to update the maps on Karoo unless we release a map update. We are aware that some maps needs to be updated. I will definitely bring this up to the Product team. They will be happy to discuss this.

I second this. OSM maps evolve quite fast given the active community. When I used my Garmin Edge 800 (before the Karoo), I biweekly updated my maps via OpenFietsMap. They have an automated procedure to publish map image files. Should be possible for the Karoo too, no?

    ... the map-management needs improvement

... after the last Karoo-Update I had the problem that I couldn't download any map.

(there was no button for download or remove a map)

... I had to do a factory-reset - the first time for me (since the very beginnings) :-(

... I think the map management should be handled over the Dashboard

We are working on an extensive project for the maps and Routing and you will see significant improvements in the future.

For the issue with the download button, it usually happens if there is a fluctuation in the internet connection.

@Hari Krishnan  ... thank you for the quick response - I'm curious about it :-)

... I think my problem with the map-download could really be caused by the WLAN-Connection.

... I switched to the route-selection or the navigation screen and therefore the WLAN disconnect.

@Hari Krishnan  ... it seems that my problem had nothing to do with the internet connection - there is a bug
After the Karoo-Update to version 1.132.823.3 I played a little arround with the "Offline Map Sections".
--> the result - I had to do a factory reset because I can´t download any map - now it works but still this strange behavior:
I downloaded 3 maps for the country "Europe/Germany" - Bayern, Sachsen & Thueringen
--> the software automatically downloads a 4th map "Saarland" (it´s in Germany too - but far away).
( I never loaded this map before )If I remove "Saarland" than it looks like that the map "Bayern" is deleted too - there is the field "Download".
( ... but the map for "Bayern" is still there.)
The other 2 Maps (Sachsen, Thueringen) are still there - you find here the field "Remove"
If I press "Download" for Bayern and reboot the Karoo I get the extra-map "Saarland" !?
... perhaps I should go to "Saarland" for biking ;-)

Hi Thomas, For the first issue with the Wi-Fi, if the Wi-Fi is turned ON on your Karoo, it will be automatically disabled once you start a ride. The ideal goal is to save the battery. Once you save/discard the activity, the Wi-Fi will be enabled again automatically. This is the design flow.

For the next issue with the offline map, thank you for bringing this to our attention and we are able to reproduce this. I have brought this to the notice of the software team.

Yes, please! Up to date maps are very important, especially when you can improve your local map yourself on OSM. Garmins have had the possibility to convert OSM data to device maps for years, so this should be an easy to add option for power users as well: just open the spec for the map format and make them uploadable via USB or WiFi.

The maps on my Karoo2 are at least 5 years old, the Dome/Tods cafe in Mandurah western Australia has been there for 5 years nothing on the map

Since HH uses OSM data, frequently updated maps should be one of its strengths. However, maps are not updated on a frequent basis and that's just sad. Also, official support of custom OSM maps would be great too. It works well on my Gar[xxx] watch and that's why I will be a loyal customer. With HH I will reconsider my buying options if this does not improve.

I would also like to add my support to more frequent map updates.  In Southern California they are doing some freeway remodels.  The HH underlying map is over a year out of date.  Since you are copying open source maps, it should be easy and free for you to update the maps more often.

One of the strongest features of OSM is the quick update of the anywhere reality by local mappers. All of mappers, I think, are users of the OSM maps, and maybe a bunch of those have a Karoo for cycling (like me). It's a terrible pity that maps are updated only twice a year (if I'm not wrong), the inmediate changes that a user put on OSM don't appear on Karoo maybe until a year later. Moreover, on Dashboard map you can have updated maps, but not on karoo device.

I use OsmAnd app too on Android, and I have updates each hour for my OSM map area. Maybe it is too extreme for the Karoo, but as original post said, 1 month delay could be a reasonable time for updates (from the user point of view), taking into account that someone has to "take a photo" on the different map areas in a certain moment, processing it, and packaging for Karoo devices, and it could be take its own time. I don't know how much time does it need, but I don't think it could be a long time that could make impossible to have updates every month.

I hope this matter will improve in the future.

    Regards.

Hammerhead team - please understand that this thread has been going on for over 4 years now.  Other GPS heads find a way to reload the OSM updates monthly or even weekly.  How hard can it be to have a background process on your server to grab the new OSM maps, available to you for free, often, and make them available to us?  Can you at least support a way that we can download new maps ourselves and manually install them?

This should be a bloody embarrassment for Hammerhead. @HariKrishnan, I see you were working on an "extensive project for the maps" and "significant improvements" FIVE YEARS ago—and what has come of it? Nada. Zilch. Zero. Maps used to be one if the Karoo's strong points, and now there's a significant number of customers who NEVER got a map update while hobbyist-run apps like OsmAnd manage to provide HOURLY updates 🤯
It's completely incomprehensible. The pipeline to produce the maps from OSM obviously exists. The decision to only run it once every leap year and not say weekly can hardly be one of cost—is it that after years of embarrassingly unstable software in the Karoo 1 this part of the ecosystem is finally fixed and you really need something else to spoil the platform for customers?

Dear riders, we release map updates around every 6 months. The next map update is due in next few months. While we have made some improvements to maps and introduced Suunto Heatmaps on Karoo, I understand that it didn't meet your expectations. I will share your feedback with the Product team.

Please note that marking the post answered doesn't mean a feature is implemented or issue is being solved. It means the post is addressed by someone from the team.

The last map files I got are dated 2024-09-13. That's 8 months now, but the OSM data must have been older by that time; my edits from early September are not included, the latest I could find on the Karoo is from late June 2024. If new maps are due in a" few months" from now, we're looking at data that's about a year old. That may be OK for a car navigation system where highways take years to build and generally stay around for at least decades, but if you're riding poorly mapped areas and make an effort to improve the map prior to some planned tour or event, that's an eternity.

A developer option that would let the user configure the URL for the map repository and thus add a custom one would easily fix that. Of course it would also eliminate the pain people feel when a product is EOL and doesn't receive map updates any more, thus reducing the incentive to upgrade, so I guess we're not gonna see it happen.

You're right, there's Sunnto Heatmaps now—I forgot about them because without a Suunto device they're just not usable. Not like I saw much value in on-device heatmaps to be honest; on the dashboard, they'd make sense for route planning, but not on the computer. It's just another map layer anyway. Not like it was a technical achievement, layers are basically free with available map widgets.

Hari, can you make sure that you dev team reads through Matthias' comments?  Matthias clearly lays out the issue for them.  Perhaps your dev team drives or rides on highways more than bicycle paths?  Perhaps they do not understand that bike pathways can have some temporary construction or detours pop up way more often than yearly, or even monthly. Opencyclemap updates weekly.

Please, give us some tool so we can update it as often as we feel the need, or at least give us some documentation so that one of us can develop a side utility to load a new OSM map as often a we need.

Hiya, just read through the trail of messages - I've moved to a new city (Riyadh in KSA) and looking to plot cycling routes but the map is extremely out of date (definitely more than 6 months).  Is there an option to update this map?
