Pretty much sums up my feelings really. For me the device has gone backwards both in features and implementation since I’ve owned it. I too wish I had never updated.

I am very close to selling it, just hoping we get some worthwhile updates real soon, even going back to where it was would be a positive but I think I may be disappointed.

Hey guys, I had similar issues with many functions which froze many times and then I got this error message frequently: “Settings isn’t responding. Do you want to close it?” Very frustrating indeed. Today I performed a factory reset which you’ll find under Settings. I logged back and everything seems to be working again except the sensors which I needed to pair again and the offline maps which I needed to reload. I’ll report back again in a few days to see if Karoo works on a ride.

@ Colin: I see that you are facing issues with your Karoo. Could you please elaborate on the exact issue that you are facing? In this way, we can help you troubleshoot the issue.

@ John: It seems that the issue that you were facing is due to the accumulated cache memory which needs to be cleared out completely. Upon Factory reset, this has been cleared and I understand that it is working as expected now.

The activities, Data screens, Bike Profiles, and Routes are account specific. These details will be retained once you log in to your Hammerhead account after performing the Factory reset. At the same time, you have to download the offline maps and pair the sensors again.

@John, Hari:  I did the factory reset last week and everything seemed fine until it quit at 37 miles on the second ride after reset.  I did reboot and got it to work for a 25 mile ride.  Then yesterday it quit at 47.  flashed a bunch of stuff about laps right before it froze.  tried to save.  it tried to save for over an hour before i just powder it off.  ride lost.  It froze everyrhing and was in saving spin mode, I tried to power off while on the ride and it did un freeze cadence, mph and heart rate but the save icon was still spinning.  It would not record miles or ride time.  I got it to power off after i got home.

@Hari  I am working with support but this is getting crazy.  I spend more time trying to fix the unit then I do riding.  My unit is less then a year old Worked pretty good before the big update.  I had small issues ie.  it would turn off wifi on its own and I would need to turn it back on.  Not a big deal.  Dropping rides= BIG DEAL!!

@ Jim: That sounds terrible. I agree that the several rounds of firmware updates seem to have taxed the OS reliability. Maybe the hardware needs to be updated to handle the more robust firmware, hence V2 is coming out. Hopefully Hammerhead will give us a discounted price because some of us recently bought the units. In addition to Karoo, I always record my rides with Strava or Ride w/ GPS to have a backup source.

@John.   I will start using strava seeing that I can't rely on the karoo.  I'll probably just remove the garmin mount and go back the the iphone mount and use strava.  Not to happy about that

Mine seems to be working after a factory reset but my home altitude has lost nearly 250ft even after a calibration since the last update and I randomly get lap messages flash up on a ride. I recently got lap 1 finished on a ride and 10 seconds later lap 2 finished, then it worked normally again. Very frustrated that I was very happy with it pre the major update. That ruined it visually and took away features I liked and reliability.

@ Jim: I totally understand how frustrated you are and this is not acceptable for any of us. Please be assured that we will find a solution for you as we are working on your ticket. I see that Abhishek has already replied to your latest email and I suggest you continue following up on the ticket. That is the most preferred way to troubleshoot the issue as sharing the files will be easy there. I hope you understand.

@ John: Thank you for sharing your valuable feedback and acknowledging our efforts and improvements that you saw on Karoo. I assume that yo have performed the factory reset we suggested. If not, we recommend you perform the factory reset as this could potentially improves the performance of the unit.

One thing we can assure you is that Karoo 2 will be worth the wait and will take your riding experience to the next level in every aspect. We will ensure a smooth upgrade with a good deal to all the existing Karoo users.

@ Hari:  Yes, I've factory reset the units and then paired sensors and downloaded offline maps.  I'll be riding tomorrow and will report back any issues. Hari, the periodic clearing of the cache (i.e. factory reset or partial clearing through developer access) is a function users needed to do since the debut of Karoo to restore functionality. Sometimes we don't know if the units work until we ride, so knowing when to do factory reset is unclear, so it becomes frustrating and inconvenient if you have to do it while riding. Users should not have to do that, so I have a suggestion.  How about each time the units power off/on or when downloading firmware updates the cache data that creates issues is automatically cleared?

Unrelated to this topic, I'd like to see or option to view the map/route of each recorded ride.

@ Hari: I rode for three hours following a route. Everything worked well until the end when I saved my ride. It was stuck in saving mode (with circle) indefinitely. I powered off but fortunately the ride was saved. Other than that no issues.

@hari I too have gotten the "spinning save circle" after pausing, then hitting Stop. Both times, rebooting clears the save circle and my activity was saved. First one was in July 2020 and second time was August 18.

Just received my Karoo 2 last week and had a bit of a learning curve getting things set up but got through it although it seemed like it should have been easier.

Went on my first ride and of course had no route set up so I had to stare at “no route” on my screen the whole ride.

So I got the clue to set up a route for my next ride. I sync’d a route from Strava and headed out. The screen kept turning off which I assumed was because I had the screen timeout at 2 minutes. I know it wasn’t battery saver. Nonetheless it was iirritating to have to continually press a button to get the screen to come on. Then about 10 miles in to my ride the thing shut down and rebooted. It said fails to recover ride and I tried to restart it. Kept getting “failed to recover ride data” and left me there. I could not restart a ride due to that error. So I just finished my ride and was frustrated that maybe I flushed $500. I reset to factory settings and went through all the support on setting it up again. Admit that the support topics assisted in getting things set up a bit more custom to my liking. I wanted to eliminate any possibility that the route from Strava might have caused the shutdown so I rebuilt the route and loaded it and rode it again. Set the screen timeout to 39 min to see if that solved my screen off problem.

Happy to say the next ride was flawless and met my expectations.

    My take:

On boarding should be a bit more thorough in getting profiles, routes, sensors, and data screens in place as most users will be so damn excited to finally get theirs and throw it on the bike and ride that it won’t be as impressive as it should be.

I think the screen on or off should be more intuitive. I get that B&D buttons can do this but seems odd to ride with the screen off unless I turn it off.

I believe the route had two segments that were not well connected in Strava and that caused my shutdown of the Karoo on my first route ride. Changing from that Strava Route to one created in HH seems to have solved this. I guess beware of erroneous Strava Route imports.

Love the notifications as some I ride with will text that they have turned around or have flatted and this is a real help in group rides or when the wife is trying to get me.

All the profile pages and the ability to swipe between them for climbing sections, speed sections or dicey navigation areas is a game changer for my riding.

Still need more experience with it but even with a shakey start this thing is 5 stars.

@Steve, Hammerhead has come a long way since the debut of its K1. K2 works well today and you’ll learn it quickly even if this is your first exposure to Karoos. It’s made by gearheads fior gearheads so you’ll have to discover the nuances.

My favorite app to create routes is Ride w/ GPS. Works flawlessly on Karoo. Route creation on the HH desktop is limited because after you have used 100 touch points on the map the route creation stops.

Welcome to our community and enjoy K2.
