Will you still support the older Karoo?
AnsweredI have had so many issues with my Karoo that, until this last software upgrade, I was thinking of dumping it. Some of these issues that were corrected/fixed by this upgrade include:
- The buttons and repeatedly tapping took forever to get the unit into the "In Ride" mode. It was so bad that at times I thought I needed to get a BIG hammer! Now, a very light tap on that yellow square puts it immediately in that mode without any hassle or other action that was required before.
- Changing routes during a ride required multiple punching of the side button(s) before anything happened and then it was a pain to change routes once I was able to get to that screen. Now!? One push on the upper right hand button puts the route icon right up where you can see it and then a very light tap on that icon brings up the route library. From there a light tap on the wanted route and then another light tap on the blue check box and my Karoo immediately goes into the reroute mode to the route selected.
- I am an older guy so I do not see so well. Before this upgrade everything seemed to be in the smallest possible type size. Now, the bottom of the screen directions can be easily read, the clock in the upper right hand corner can actually be seen and read, and the ride timer display, which I think was new with this upgrade, is very conveniently located on the main screen to the left of the clock.
- Going into the pause mode is automatic with just a light tap.
I cannot/will not comment on anything that has to do with connecting to Strada, whatever that is, a heart monitor, or any performance recording functions because I could care less about that stuff. 40-years ago I was probably interested in performance stuff but not anymore so that is why there is nothing from me concerning that side of the Karoo house with this post.
Now, I have mentioned just a very few things that are so much better with this last upgrade. There are still some issues that will never be resolved but this last software update made my Karoo so much better I must ask why should we even consider a new unit?
I read the comments about the mounting bracket and that is an issue that HH can never solve. The mounting hardware that came with my unit is still in the box it was mailed in. That mounting bracket just never worked on my bikes. I use my Karoo on four (4) bikes and these all sport the old style 22.2mm handle bars. The bracket that came last year was not designed for these older bars and try as I did there was no way to make them work. I found that the "wahoo ELEMENT AERO BAR MOUNT" was the perfect solution for a secure mount for my Karoo unit. How is this "new" mount going to be better than the original mount that did not work with 22.2mm bars?
Enough of that! Will HH support my "old" Karoo with future software upgrades once the promotion for the Karoo 2 is over? Or, will HH abandon the older Karoo units and force us to buy a new unit to keep up with software/map/route upgrade situations?

Hey William. First of all, I wish to apologize for all the inconvenience and hassle caused to you because of the bugs that we had in the earlier version of the software.
I am certainly super happy that you are so satisfied with the latest software update that you are thinking about why you even need to upgrade to the Karoo 2.
The New Mounting System presents a far greater contact area between the head unit and mount making it intrinsically stronger than a quarter turn design. Karoo 2 slides into the Karoo Mount with an affirmative click. It disconnects through rotation that requires overcoming two points of friction to prevent unwanted dismounting.
We have no plans of leaving our Karoo customers in the dark. There is no strategy or plan that we will action in turn forcing our customers to upgrade. We will continue to support Karoo with Hardware and Software. There are certainly plans to keep putting out regular software updates. You will see that continue.
