Clear iPhone Notifications

With the new update iPhone notifications are different but I cannot figure out how to clear a notification after it pops up.  I know you can swipe down?  But how do you clear or remove the notification so its no longer shown?

  They all stay there on purpose, so if you miss one (because you are, you know, riding your bike) you can see it any time during the ride. Or if two come in at once, they are both there by swiping up.

  Like you said, swiping down removes it from the screen. The only way to "clear" the notifications so they are completely gone is to end the ride I think. If that doesn't do it, you'll have to restart.

  Why would they stay on purpose. They used to stay until you swiped to acknowledge it. You could keep it there. Or remove it.

  This is a change in functionality and goes backward.
