Varia Radar stops giving alerts
AnsweredThree times in the past month my Varia 315 has worked fine for a long period of a ride, easily an hour or more, then I realize that cars are passing with no audible or visual cue. The device still shows as paired and is 2nd from the top of my sensor list (always was).
In the "Known Bugs" messages posted today by Hammerhead I saw one item called "Varia stopped displaying the cars even if it is connected:" with "Only two users reported this and the software team is actively investigating this issue."
I'm not sure if this is the same situation that I'm now seeing. The radar has been in use since mid-June without any noticeable failures until early September.
Some on-road checks and experimentation reveals that the 315 is still shown as Connected.
Cycling the power on the 315 does cause the K2 to show a disconnect and reconnect, but still no vehicle traffic is displayed or alerted. Forcing a RADAR disconnect and reconnect on the sensors screen has no impact either.
Cycling ANT+ connectivity IMMEDIATELY seems to restore the alerts.
Submitted for Hammerhead's information and to be added to the list of in-progress items if this is indeed what's been reported previously.

Hi Bob, Thank you for reporting this to us. For us to isolate the issue further, did you see if the Radar was muted when you came across this issue as in the below pic?

Also, please confirm if the solutions provided here have been followed:

Good morning Hari. I'm going to say no the icon was not there with the caveat that without my reading glasses on I don't know that the mute icon appeared, but I really do not think (95% certainty) that it was there any of the three times, no. Nor have I ever intentionally used the mute function for anything in the past.
In reference to the two Garmin links, the radar is mounted on the very back of my underseat bag roughly 15cm above the peak of the rear wheel circumference and it's very stable in the same position it has always been. The events I have experienced are quite literally from at least 70 rides since mid-June when I bought the radar and have all occurred just in the last 3-4 weeks. My rides begin and end on a busy road so I know it's working both heading out and coming back on every ride. These failures were all mid-ride with light to sometimes no traffic for 10 or 15 minutes at a time then I'd realize vehicles were passing me without warning.
When it did happen I took the radar off the mount and held it up into traffic and nothing changed, there were no alerts. Only the ANT+ cycle cleared it each time, the first by trial and error and the next two by knowing that it seemed to be the answer.

I hope I've sent the information you requested via the email link. My apologies for sending it twice, the first time was from an alternate email address I use so I sent it a second time from my usual account. The contents of both messages are identical.
Apologies for any confusion!

I'll post this here rather than in the ticket we had open through the fall of 2021 so everyone can see any update. In the software bugs list through the past few months I've noticed rare reference to this situation as "still under investigation". Has there been no progress at all in the radar audio cue dropping problem? We're finally able to start getting back out on the road after a long winter on the trainer and I'm very curious if I should be anticipating the same random radar alert failures, be forewarned of firmware changes that may require a change in how I pair the Varia or perhaps have other effects on the audio reliability. (The loss of T-B-T audio cues in a separate thread right around the time I first reported this issue comes to mind.)
Thanks for any update you can offer. I don't want to keep reporting a known issue but if you're anticipating feedback because of internal changes I'll be happy to offer my ongoing observations.
Bob
