Feature request to prevent overages on sim card in Karoo 2
After blowing out my data limit on the sim card indoors on WiFi downloading a firmware update, I'm requesting a new switch on the settings->Cellular Data screen to prevent downloading firmware over cellular. "Allow firmware downloads over cellular"->On/Off
That way, I can still have Auto Download Firmware->ON and Settings->Cellular Data->mobile data left on for tracking. Tracking is essential to let family know I'm still moving and where I am when riding outdoors, which is inherently risky.

I support the idea for having a more accessible toggle for that, but it's already a (quite hidden) option:
In Settings → Cellular Data → Data Usage you can scroll down and see a list of apps/services that used data.
I have disabled Background data for the OfflineRegionService (map updates?) and System Update. Everything else I kept as is.
I did this some month ago (after it pulled both system and map updates over cellular), and everything still works for me: live tracking on cellular, sync of routes and rides, system updates over WiFi etc, no problems.

I still think it would be beneficial to have a simple (easy to understand) toggle/switch (directly within the Cellular Data screen) that the user can enable/disable to prevent/allow system updates/map downloads over cellular. Users shouldn't have to delve into Android "advanced" settings (several menu levels deep) to change the way applications behave.

Thanks sooo much for this thread! I was going nuts as the karoo suddenly drained my 0.5GB SIM that normally lasts 4-5 months in a day, every time I topped it up last few days and I didn't understand why. Figured out it was the offlineregionservice that drained it, and looked for a way to prevent it when finding this request. Thanks a bunch.
Fully agree there should be an easier way to flip this on/off under cellular data or map updates section in the settings. -
And to follow up on this... the sim was drained again the other day. Checked and noticed it was the offlineregionservice that was the culprit. Looking at it, it has background data turned off (ie not allowed) but still shows 1GB downloaded in the background and 0 in forground. I see it is working on updating the offline maps. What's up with that? Did something change here with a recent fw upgrade that broke the "background cellular data not allowed" per app switch?

Did you ever find out what was going on with that Thomas? I am a little frustrated with my Karoo 2 right now, too. I have 100 MB of free data per month with my SIM card. Today is the first day of my new cycle and the fricken Karoo downloaded a 99 MB system update on cellular when I was also home and connected to my wifi. So, it just caused me to get charged for additional data for the month when it shouldn't even have been using cellular data to begin with.
