Crowd sourced feedback on Routes, routing preferences
Completed2 Part Request to significantly improve route creation and usability
A) Collect real-time feedback from users about roads, segments, routes.
B) allow users to select their preferences about route creation and navigation
Part A) WAZE FOR CYCLING A really helpful feature for cyclists would be the ability to provide feedback real time (and after rides as well) about a segment of road or a whole route. Types of feedback: Surface quality: allow users to Mark a section of road as good (ex: fresh paved, protected bike lanes, etc) or bad (ex: under construction, rough/potholes, lots of debris). Traffic/drivers: some roads and parts of town tend to have more dangerous drivers than others. Part of why people like routes is that they allow you to ride like locals... So let's go a step further and allow you to avoid roads like locals if they're known to be dangerous, by allowing riders to tag a section of road as dangerous. (It's not enough for map software to just use speed limit or traffic volume. I can make plenty of counter examples, where I feel safe riding on a 55mph highway if it has a wide shoulder and very low traffic. But I am not safe on a local 30mph road that's got a bike lane Because of how people drive on that road). Cyclists need the ability to help each other out with this kind of info. There could be other tags as well: great view, protected bike lane, speed bumps, etc. All the things that affect the quality of a route or segment that are more easily collected by crowd-sourced in person reports, rather than existing map info. Allow riders to upvote certain places or points of interest too. Like an amazing view, a fun segment, etc.
Part B) route preferences Allow riders to have a sliding scale of preference between most bike friendly to most direct route. Most bike friendly would generate routes and navigation that has a bias towards safer roads, better pavement, lower traffic, etc even if it makes a longer route. Most direct would be the opposite, with preference towards the shortest route (basically what we have today).

Hi All,
Thanks so much for your feedback and suggestions.
Introducing preferences to surfaces you’d like to ride on, configurable per profile. Now, Karoo can prefer Pavement, Gravel, or Trail when you reroute or route to a pin including Home and Start location.
Please reach out to us by submitting a ticket if you have any concerns.
Thank you!

Komoot https://www.komoot.com/ already does exactly this quite well and is pretty well integrated with the Karoo. I don’t really see any point in using the Hammerhead tools for route planning. Even if you don’t use the highlights explicitly for your route, the Komoot routing algorithm does a much better job with bike routes than, say, Google or (based on feedback from friends) Strava.
Of course the amount of useful information depends on how many and how active users there are in a given area, but doing something similar but further restricting it to just for users of a single brand of head unit isn’t going to help...
