Possible Karoo power/kJ/TSS calculation discrepancy between ride summary and FIT data
Has anyone else seen this?
I recorded one ride as two consecutive segments on my Karoo, using the same power meter and HR monitor throughout. I also recorded the exact same ride simultaneously on a Wahoo using those same sensors.
The Karoo displayed the following:
Segment 1 — 29:43
* Average power: 181 W
* Energy: 323 kJ
* TSS: 27
* NP: 224 W
Segment 2 — 1:31:46
* Average power: 231 W
* Energy: 987 kJ
* TSS: 112
* NP: 258 W
So the Karoo’s combined summary was approximately:
* 2:01:29
* 219 W average
* 1,310 kJ
* 139 TSS
Here’s where it gets strange.
I uploaded the two FIT files generated by the Karoo to TrainingPeaks, and TrainingPeaks calculated:
* Segment 1: 315 kJ / 28 TSS
* Segment 2: 1,251 kJ / 116 TSS
* Combined: 1,566 kJ / 144 TSS
I also recorded the ride on my Wahoo, which reported:
* 208 W average
* 254 W NP
* 0.85 IF
* 148 TSS
* 1,557 kJ
The kJ discrepancy is particularly strange. The Karoo itself reported only 1,310 kJ, but the FIT files apparently contain enough power data for TrainingPeaks to calculate 1,566 kJ — almost exactly matching the Wahoo’s 1,557 kJ.
The second segment is especially puzzling: 231 W for 1:31:46 would correspond to roughly 1,265 kJ, which is very close to the 1,251 kJ TrainingPeaks gets from the FIT file, but nowhere near the 987 kJ displayed by the Karoo.
So it seems like the underlying FIT data may be correct, but the metrics displayed by the Karoo during/after the ride aren’t being calculated from the same data.
Has anyone experienced something similar, or does anyone know how Karoo calculates the ride-summary metrics versus the data written to the FIT file?
I’m particularly curious about energy/kJ, average power, NP, and TSS.
