Same problem. I hope this can be fixed in the next update. Several years ago the same bug was introduced in some update and fixed some weeks later.

I've been bikepacking with this the last few days and it's not resolved itself. I ride with my Karoo mounted on my stem and this change means that I am having to look a little further down to see where I am.  Anyone from Hammerhead able to confirm if this is a bug or a change?

Map marker moved in last update. Much better now IMO, as you can actually see the road ahead.

Is this when following a route or without? What map orientation do you use (north-up or route-ahead)?

This is when following a route and it’s the same when using both north up is set and forward is set. I’ve tried to release it by remaking the profile, by adding and removing fields and also I’ve done a reset. No matter what, the arrow remains at the bottom of the screen.

Check the release notes. This is actually a feature and NOT a bug:
And AFAIC, I like it TBH :)

We updated our position marker on the map page so that it automatically adjusts its height depending on the state of your screen. This is to avoid scenarios where your position marker is covered by the drawer.

Indeed it is in the release notes, but they actually DID make it worse for some screen layout. It is a clear regression.

The marker used to be ~0,5 cm above the data fields  on the lower part of the screen. This was perfect especially for a road layout where you were doing a loop, or a > 90 degrees turn. It gave some oversight without sacrificing too much of the route ahead when going straight on.

Now the maker is right on top of the data fields. This works fine when going straight ahead and when you would like to focus on the route ahead of you, but it's a big step back in most other scenarios...

This is an example of what I would call enshittification.

Hammerhead decides in all their wisdom to change a feature without offering a setting to let it be the same as it has been for years.

So in this particular case they should have added a new display map setting (lock position marker in the center or lock position marker at the bottom) but they didn't.

There may be many people liking the new lock position but now Hammerhead is insulting users who have good reasons wanting the position marker in the center.

I think the new arrow position further down on the screen is ok, at least when the map orientation is set to my direction of travel.
However, the arrow position doesn’t make sense when the compass is set to north-up: If I’m riding south, the arrow stays near the bottom of the screen, making it very difficult to see the route ahead in the southern direction. In my opinion, this needs to be changed urgently.

Ah, I only ride in direction of travel up, so didn't observe the North-Up issue. Maybe the arrow needs to be configured for both orientations differently 👍🏼

I've looked into this on the weekend and played around. I thought (based on what I noted and the release note) that HH fixed the annoying issue that the drawers cover the position marker (which was essentially rendering the map useless in when a drawer was half up). At the same time, though, they have shifted the marker down (also for north-up) routing. I understand there are different preferences, so a config option might be right (though I am always a bit reluctant, since too many options do not improve user experience, see Garmin).

Anyway, my personal take would be:

    - for north-up, the marker should be in the center of the visible area, b/c north-up otherwise only makes sense when traveling towards north (essentially, north-up is **broken** at the moment)

    - shift the marker slightly up, the current position isn't great when sharp bends are ahead (anything more then +/- 90°), or come up with an adaptive positive that moves the marker on this kind of turn.
