Dark Mode Maps
AnsweredAre there any possibilities to get the maps in dark mode?
Would be much better for nightrides and low light.

Thanks for the fast reply. Didn't knew that this wasn't a common request.
Thought for all the ultra endurance rider or myself, that usually drives 8-12h per ride, which means a couple of hours are thru the night, it would be really helpful.
Screen on my Karoo 2 are also too bright at night time.
Possibility to switch the settings to not such a bright mode at night? -
Hello Wimking,
I noticed yesterday there is a dark/light mode option on the device. When a ride is recording, swipe down to see the option.
Below is a link to HH Info for a HH1 unit but also works on HH2.
Hope this helps!

Big +1 from me: even on lowest setting, the screen is much too bright for night rides. For me, it poses a security risk, as my eyes adjust to the brightness when looking at the screen, and then need several seconds to readjust to the dark, during which visibility is much reduced. I therefore turn the screen off as much as possible during the night and sometimes navigate with other devices instead of the Karoo. Dark maps would be superb.

So yes, after a first long night right last friday, the top priority thing on my todo list for this week was to check how to switch my karoo to dark mode...
Just to realize it's not possible for now? And someone made a first request 2 years ago? I can't see myself riding a full night with the current settings, and I have a 400kms ride planned next month.
Is it possible to at least provide a way to lower the brightness (way) further? Last resort would be to add some semi translucent sheet of plastic to act as a ND filter :'(

Hi Philippe, I completely understand your interest in having the map available in dark mode. Our team is already aware of the request and may consider it for a future update. We can't provide a specific timeline for its implementation at this time. We really appreciate your feedback, and it helps us improve the product experience!

Hi Hammerhead. I tell all my cycling buddies about my wonderful Karoo 2, and show them how fantastic and capable it is. But then they ask me if there are any problems with it. And I then tell them that there's no dark map mode for navigation outside of daylight hours, and it's a major downside to this otherwise best in class product. It really disappoints me, as everything else about it is top-notch. I don't understand why such a minor but incredibly important feature wouldn't have been introduced by now. Is it even on your backlog?

Hey Ian, yes, our product team is already aware of this feature request, and it’s planned for a future update. While we don’t have an exact timeline for its release yet, we truly appreciate your feedback. We're always working to improve the product based on what our riders need and suggest!

Karoo 3 allows you to activate Extra Dim. (I don't know if this works with Karoo 2 because of the older version of Android.)
Required steps:
- Activate Developer Mode (Settings - About - click on build number several times)
- Activate Extra dim: Settings - Apps: Select the first "Settings" app, select Open, select Accessibility, Select "Extra dim" with several options:
This is kind of an electronic ND filter. You can adjust the intensity (this allows you to set the brightness to very very low) and you can also create a shortcut, this is a floating button to enable/disable the extra dim in every screen:
Have fun with Karoo on your night rides!

@MacGyver Your comments are very much appreciated. Would be an acceptable workaround while we wait for the proper feature.
Sadly it does not work on the Karoo2, as the extra dim feature seems to be introduced with Android 14 (maybe earlier as a developper option as the Karoo 3 is Android 12). Color inversion seems older (Android 10?) but I don't see it either. In fact I see no accessibility option at all.
So I'm out of luck. -
Please make the dark mode map a possibility. As some aleady mentioned its a safety feature when riding at dawn or night.
Or if its not possible gor your developers at leastake the possibility to dim the screen more.
Otherwise i try to programm and code my karoo2 to get it to work.
2 years later and still nothing changed.

@MacGyver Wohooo thanks a lot!
I sideloaded red moon. this link was the easiest tutorial i could find (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ci4GP31nmDA&list=WL&index=8) and it dimms the screen a lot.
I don't know if it uses more battery with the app constantly open but for now its million times better then before when i ride at night. Saved my day! -
@Wimking
You are welcome.
I rarely ride at night and then only in the city.
Can you tell more about your night rides?
- Which bike do you use? MTB? E-MTB? Gravel bike?
- Which routes do you ride? Road, forest trail, gravel, mountain trail, downhill?
- Do you have a lighting system on your bike? High power light?
- Why do you need the Karoo? Navigation? Climber? Statistics?
