Garmin radar rtl515 and K2
AnsweredUsed K2 for the first time and was extremely happy how quickly it paired with both the Garmin Varia front light and RTL515 radar rear light. Much quicker than I managed to get my Garmin 830 to pair with them the first time.
It would be nice to be able to put the sidebar on the right (I know not massively important but for some reason I’d prefer it like my Garmin in that side)
Performance wise for some reason most of the time the cars would appear in the bar halfway up rather than from the bottom. I noticed this particularly on some of the long straight Cheshire roads where there was no chance the car turned onto the road as there were no junctions. On a couple of occasions it failed completely to spot cars that came just after another had passed.
I’ve used it 5 times with my 830 on the same route and not experienced any issues like this. All cars that come from behind appear at the bottom, and unless a car is really tailgating it hasn’t missed a single car yet.
The radar hasn’t moved position, and is obviously the same tech so I’m not sure why there is a disparity but it went from being flawless with the 830 to just decent with the K2.

Hey Damon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your insights & experience with the Karoo 2.
I do apologize it hasn't lived up to expectations when compared to your other device. At this time we have no immediate plans for customization of the sidebar based on preference. However, this is a great suggestion!
If the discrepancies described continue to occur, I do recommend raising this as a ticket with our support team to further investigate the device.
Thanks for reaching out.

I've noticed a similar issue in the way that it detects vehicles. Riding with another person with a Varia this weekend side by side and his consistently picked up a vehicle a full second to two seconds before the Karoo2 beeped. I've also noticed that vehicles start halfway up the sidebar. Is there some sort of delay?

Silly question, but have you turned around and looked how far away the car is when the K2 first picks it up / beeps, with car shown halfway along screen? I ask because I have the RVR315 (same, just no light) and I've noticed the same as you. But when I look behind me the car is a long ways away. I *think* the car is about as far away as the Varia can see it. So on the hand the K2 is working to notify you as soon as the Varia sees the car, so that's good (and the important thing). But perhaps it's misidentifying where to place the little car icon on the screen.
I've also noticed no difference between yellow and red, when red should mean the car is coming a lot faster....but that's anecdotal.

I’ll try and pay attention on my ride tomorrow.
On memory, the car passed at the time it should have (when the radar showed car at top) so unless it’s initially putting the car halfway when it’s at the radars furthest point of detection and just slowing the advancing icon as the car approaches then it’s failing to notify me as it approaches from the furthest point to halfway.
I’ll pay attention to this tomorrow.
