You have to ride a planned route in order the elevation graph to shows up.

@ Yves, much thanks for the fast response, it is greatly appreciated.  I will test that the next time that I ride.

When you are not riding a planned route,  I think the device should show an incoming elevation anyway based on your current direction.   This would be a nice enhancement.

@ Yves, agreed as this is what I expected to on this morning's ride which is precisely why I asked the question!  Especially given that the GPS functionality knows where you are!

    Hey Joel and Yves!

To confirm what Yves said - yes you must be on a route of some sort for the Karoo to know where you are going and provide that data.

I can see where you're coming from, but if you do not have a route loaded, it does not know if you are remaining on the road that you're on or turning in 100m so it is unable to tell you what ascent to expect, unless it assumed you weren't going to make any turns for the next few km. Then it would be aggravating because it usually wouldn't be correct since most people don't just stay on one road the whole time.

I hope that helps to explain it a bit!

@ Yves, much thanks for the explanation which makes perfect sense.  That said, I have added a number of routes and will test it out!

I understand that the Karoo can not figure out where your going when you ride without a route.  However, if it could assume your going straight and reset incoming elevation data every time you make a turn that would be better than nothing.

Agreed noting that is what I expected it to do but know understand why it did not do so!

I agree it would make a lot sense to show the current ride profile when a route is not available.

Absolutely agree on this. I find it a very poor implementation that the upcoming elevation field is empty when you do not have a route loaded. Either simply fall-back to the history elevation in this case or make a prediction (Wahoo is doing the latter, maybe Garmin as well). Either would be acceptable (with the prediction being my favorite). Otherwise, it kinda means that I would need different ride profile for following a route or not (in order to prevent a more-or-less pointless data page).
