Karoo 2 - Map missing when no route selected?

Does Karoo 2 work for tracking a ride without preselecting a route? I checked in the dashboard to make sure the area I was riding showed the trails. I have the map for the entire state downloaded to the device. I got to the trailhead, fired up the unit, hit play, and was presented with an arrow showing my current location in the middle of an empty grey screen. Is there some other step I need to do to pre-load the map for a given area, so I can track / navigate when I don't have a specific route preference?

  A grey map screen, sounds like the map was not available for the use. Please check those are available under the offline maps, and the device has a gps lock/fix before you start recording.

  Yeah, it works just fine without a route. You could also create a random route in the area where you will be riding, that should make the unit prompt for downloading the necessary map file(s) more or less automatically.

  Then again it could also be that the map is simply incomplete in the area you’re riding in and anyway the default zoom level when you start your ride is really close so there won’t be a lot showing on the screen in any case. If you suspect that could be the case, you can check the base map that Hammerhead uses at openstreetmap.org.
