Auto-start functionality

Hi all!

Question: is it possible to implement in the Karoo the auto start ride functionality, once Karoo detects a speed value above a pre-set number?

Together with the already implemented auto-pause feature, it would be quite nice!

That's really a good suggestion. We thought about this feature and will discuss this as per the number of feedback we are getting from the users.

I like this option as well, but if this feature will be implemented, than please make it configurable (yes, I know.....more complicated software and also for the end user).

I also would like to be able to start my ride at a certain point rolling where I determine to start the ride (and measuring my cycling figures) myself

Please add the auto-start feature. I mainly use my Garmin 1030 because on cold days my gloves won't operate the Hammerhead screen to press start.

Hi,

Yes, auto-start feature will be very, very useful ! In my opinion, this is the only feature I regret from my old Garmin GPS. With auto-start, the Karoo 2 will be nearly perfect !

Auto-Start is a must, why would you not have added this with the auto-pause feature. Lets get this feature added on the next release. Thank you.

@benno zwanenburg Thank you for your helpful advice. I wasn't aware of that functionality. Nonetheless, with winter gloves it would not be a good solution with winter gloves. I sincerely appreciate your help though. Hammerhead needs to make this feature a priority.

I'm pretty sure an old Mio device I used to have would record in the background once movement was detected. If you rode a couple of miles and had forgotten to start recording, when you did hit start it would start the ride from when you started moving.

Does that make sense?

@M L makes sense! All Garmin bike computers have this critical feature. In fact, I have to return to my Garmin 1030 when the weather is too cold or wet in order to use their auto-start feature.

I forget to start my ride every time I go since I'm so used to having auto-start coming from Garmin.

Karoo already warns you that you're moving and you haven't started the ride, just add a toggle in settings to auto start and change that text to say auto-starting your ride instead.

This can't be that hard for the smart guys at Hammerhead! All the other features of the Hammerhead, especially the display are excellent. I just need this one thing to stop using my Garmin 1030. Good comment.

Perhaps a bigger readable warning/sign/pop-up that you started the ride? Yesterday I missed 30K of the ride before I figured out that I forgot to record. Perhaps it's getting used too. But anyway.... improvement is appreciated.

When will auto-start be implemented? I note that the question was first raised 3 years ago and got a positive response from Hammerhead. As others have said, Garmin and perhaps other manufacturers have had it for years.

It's 2025 and this basic feature that has been on all Garmin edge computers forever is still not implemented. As a new karoo user it seems unbelievably stupid that I even have to press start, but for it to then tell me I haven't pressed start is not only stupid (imo) but infuriating (to me). How hard is it to implement an option to just do it. I'm riding, start recording. Please just do it. Update April 2026: I still see regular Karoo updates adding more and more useless "features" that I will never use but still this basic feature is in the too-hard basket.

+1 for the auto-start

I often forget to start my bike computer. Mid ride I notice it is off, and I click the "power on" button. But it takes awhile to boot up. At that point I stopped paying attention to it, and it is still not recording my ride.

Karoo already warns you that you're moving and you haven't started the ride, just add a toggle in settings to auto start and change that text to say auto-starting your ride instead.

Creo que es una función absolutamente imprescindible. Otras marcas de la competencia lo tienen implementado además de el aviso de que no he pulsado el botón de play y estoy en movimiento. Estamos hablando de un dispositivo GPS de alta gama que no tiene esta función. Señores de Hemmerhead, esta función es básica y no tiene sentido ninguno que un dispositivo con tanta reputación como es el Karoo 3 no lo tenga y otras marcas si desde hace bastantes años. Por favor, desarrollen una actualización que tenga esta función tan esencial.

+1 I agree. The amount of times I have started a ride thinking the record mode had started, only for it not, is immeasurable. It's not obvious you are recording. Autostart would be a great idea. Worse cade, an on-screen message saying 'Press Button to start recording' or something akin to this.
