I've only had the RVR315 for about 3 weeks and I have never seen the Karoo 2 turn it on at the start of a route. The Karoo starts my Ion 800 front light automatically in the selected mode but I assumed the Varia had to be powered on manually prior to setting off. I'll be watching this thread for clarification....

you may be right, but I think that its supposed to turn on/off at the start/end of a ride, just like the light does. Still haven't been able to figure out why my Flare RT wont turn on though. I've done a hard reset. paired each sensor individually, it just wont turn the flare on.

Actually I hope you're right as the more I learn about the controlability of some of these devices the more I'm thinking the Karoo should be able to turn the Varia off and on just like it does lights, if Garmin allows that functionality. For anyone who has used a Varia with another brand head unit, is it controllable (the radar portion) or is only the light on the 510/515 turned on and off by the computer?

Can confirm varia switches on at startup, never had an issue with it turning on front and rear lights.
1 make sure varia radar below lights.
2 make sure you have varia light added as well as the radar as they are separate
3 make sure ant+ is turned on in varia and in light settings it's switched to a light mode
4 lights won't turn on until you actually start a ride

I've tried the RVR315 in every position on the sensor list and it's never found as a paired device unless turned on, and that's with just ANT+ or both BLE and ANT+ enabled on the Karoo 2. If I delete it from the list it pairs using ANT+ with no issues. Remember we're both referring to the 315, so no built-in light to be concerned with it having 2 internal but seperately paired devices. Perhaps the 315 firmware does not allow auto-connectivity - I'll play some more including removing all other external sensors and see what happens.

I'm beginning to think that the RVR315 does not turn on automatically; possibly because there is no light. Hopefully, the HH staff can confirm. This still doesn't solve my Flare RT issue, but at least I would know that the radar is functioning as intended.

You can try turning it on then record ride. Stop ride to sync it, wild shot I know. Flare should work I think I know the bontrager ion works fine.

great idea... unfortunately it did not work. tried turning the flare on, then starting the ride... tried starting the ride first, then turning it on. neither worked. thanks for the suggestion though. is it possible that its an issue with the light?

UPDATE:  my flare issue is resolved. it took a reset of the light to get it fixed. Still unsure about the radar, but I think it might need to be powered on manually. Waiting on the HH tech to advise.

    Hello all!

I will chime in here... As James mentions, issues like what he experienced with the Flare are often solved by performing a reset on the light. Check the manufacturer's website for instructions specific to your model.

As for the radar, Varia radar units will not power on when you start a ride. The Varia units have a standby mode. When you press the device button for 2 seconds, the device comes on in standby mode - the LED indicator will flash blue to let you know that it's in standby mode. Garmin states that the Varia units can remain in standby mode for 3-5 months before the battery is depleted. If you leave it in standby mode, the radar will be enabled when you start a ride, and disabled when you end the ride. This is the design of the radar unit and that behavior is consistent regardless of the head unit that you use.
