Temperature is way off

    Good morning!
I must note that the problem with the incorrect temperature display still exists. I have had my Karoo 2 for 5 months and it has never displayed the temperature correctly (compared to my weather app). Deviation of up to 4/5 degrees Celsius.
Too bad Hammerhead obviously does not care about this problem.

Windchill is the measure of evaporation on the skin. I highly doubt HH put in a sophisticated temperature sensors that can measure windchill effects.

Wind chill does not apply to objects, with an example as described here from the US National Weather Service. It is a perceived value affecting humans and animals.

The only effect wind chill has on inanimate objects, such as car radiators and water pipes, is to shorten the amount of time for the object to cool. The inanimate object will not cool below the actual air temperature. For example, if the temperature outside is -5°F and the wind chill temperature is -31°F, then your car's radiator will not drop lower than -5°F.

Having the same issue, 3-4degC lower temp constantly. Please fix that.

Just checked mine for the first time on the dashboard and I can see HH displays the temperature 4 degrees less than weather thermometer as others have said.

    Doesn't matter, in both cases.

What type of temp sensor is there in Karoo 2? Is it J type (Fe-Co) if anyone knows? Maybe PT100, or something else?

I just got a new Karoo 2 and the unit is reading 7F lower than the person I was riding with this today. He was using a Garmin Edge 830 and his temperature matches the local weather temperature readings and the readings from the car.  Is there a calibration for this?

@ Tim Strehl - This is an ongoing issue with the K2.....ongoing for literally years.  Multiple users experiencing the exact same problem yet Hammerhead continue to ignore it. It's the one issue with the unit that continues to frustrate me. Well, that and the occasionally dodgy re-routing 🙄🚲

Now its about time that HH does something about it. So many complains about same issue, I would say it's about time.

They won’t do anything about it. Just like the elevation issue. But it’s probably more like they can’t do anything about it as it’s hardware related and they just don’t want to admit it.

I am also afraid its hardware related, they used some crap, cheap thermocouple, and now there is the result.

I remember, when I got the Karoo2 2 months ago, the temp. reading was fine, pretty accurate, but in the last couple of days, when it became a bit colder, it started to show with the off set by 3 to 4 degC.

But, i just wonder why the heck they are not coding software and add possibility for users to set offset manually and fix that error by that?

This is an interesting one. Garmin have had several units over the years which do exactly the same for some. What’s interesting when a fix was put in, probably hardcoding a fudge factor, others have then being impacted negatively by the issue. I also wonder if the margin of error isn’t a fixed amount but more likely gets worse/better as it gets colder/hotter.
Truthfully, no generic phone app or bike computer will be truly accurate and nor frankly are they intended to be so.

I've done a little test. I left the Karoo 2 switched off on the table with a certified thermometer beside it. Room temperature 18.5 C, minimal airflow. I switched it on after about half an hour. The Karoo indicated 13 C. About 10 min later it read 15 C and eventually it read 18 C.

It looks to me that the electronics generate some heat warming the device. The temperature calibration has been done with the device static, ie no airflow to cool it. This would also explain why some people are seeing 2 C differences and others 4 or 5 C. Given the temperature resolution is 1 degree C, it shouldn't be that hard to construct a model to consider conductive heat loss from air movement that will give users a temp that is +/- 1 C of the weather report. I think it is reasonable to expect users to wait for the device to equilibrate after startup..

Try to clean those two small holses on the back side with a vaccum cleaner (there inside is a thermocouple of to me unkown type). I did it, and somehow it seems its more accurate, and reads current temp much faster. The speed it adapts is still very slow compared to Kestrel 5100 I own, but ok, if you are outside, there are no fast changes anyway, so its kind of irrelevant.

I tested in a room temp (22degC), and outside (10degC), and in both cases the K2 showed the same result after 15-20minutes, standing still, not in motion. Indeed it needs lots of time to adapt to ambient temps, but as said, on the bike this is pretty much irrelevant.

Those 4 holes are maybe too tiny, to allow the outside air to come inside to the thermocouple, which might also be compromised by the electronics which generates some of the heat as well (specially inisde of the housing).

I created a weather station with a raspberry pi a few years ago, the temp value was utter rubbish until it was moved away from the devices heat by a cable.

Hi I am also experiencing issues with the temperature being 4-5 degrees off. It is apparent now that its winter time and 4-5 degrees off is the difference between ice and no ice. Please give us a weather app intergration in the UI instead so we can get live weather like I had in my old garmin

My K2 is spot on which just goes to show how hard it is to make it work for everybody. I feel for the developers.

This is what happens when you have cheap hardware that is mass produced. It will work for the majority of people. But once conditions are at the ends of device tolerance, the cheapness of the equipment stands out.

@christoffer vårholm you can download the XERT app from the HH store, use it on the K2 alternatively (launched from the main menu). XERT shows full screen weather forecasts including a wind direction. Although it's a forecast it is MUCH more reliable and accurate than the K2. Just checked on my K2...

I have the same issue, that the temperature is constantly 3-4°C too low.

This morning I was riding for more than 1 hour and it was showing -3°C when everything was wet and not frozen. I always appreciates correct temperature readings on my old Garmin as it could indicate that I might watch out for icy patches when I enter a colder area or the temperature drops during a ride.

The temperature seems to be constantly too low by a certain extent. A software patch to be able to adjust the temperature display by a certain value would be already helping a lot.

I have the same problem - temperature is always 3 degrees centigrade lower than actual.  It doesn't look like a fix is coming though, this topic is years old.

Nothing will fix this issue, if the hardware (temp sensor in this case) is some cheap one, as I am sure it is. I hope they will learn from their mistakes on 3rd Karoo.

Could be, but I think making a possibility to manually calibrate temp would be a solution for a lot of users

Could be possible to add some option for offset, but I would say the offset would not work in all the range the same way, if you know what I mean. At the higher temps, I would assume the difference would be less of a difference. At least thats my experinece.

I started this thread years ago. I sold my unit also years ago. I use my phone now. It's not as sophisticated as the Karoo but since it doesn't work like it should work, what is the use? Although the Karoo has a great screen, my phone has a better and bigger screen. It's also better wheather protected since my Karoo got fried after I charged it after a ride in the rain. I got a replacement unit, so thanks Hammerhead for the service. But I sold that replacement unit and never looked back. The Karoo looked like a great new player in the market. But it turned out to be... disappointing.

I went today on a ride, outside was 0 to -1degC. K2 showed down to -6 degC!! Waaaay off.

Correct, but the K2 is inaccurate even in stable indoor conditions.
